When my daughter and I were in England last month I was surprised to find myself thinking with something like relief that our odds of being shot had significantly decreased. I hadn’t realized I lived with that (statistically unlikely, but random is random) fear.
I don’t know what the answer is. The NRA has to much money invested in politics here I’m afraid for anything to ever change. When my daughter started at University Texas this year part of orientation required all students to watch a video about what actions to take if a school shooting occurred, I am sad that such things are necessary.
I have so many family members that have guns that they just keep in an unlocked gun shelf accessible to all in the home. They seriously believe that because they have told their children that they will get their butts spanked if they touch the guns without permission that their children won’t touch the guns. I don’t know if they are naive, stupid or a combination of those.
I am fairly certain I am the only person in my large extended family that does not own a gun. I don’t hunt, and I am fairly certain I am not going to be able to defend myself against the military if for some odd reason they decided to take out the tax payers, and I know that the chances of defending myself from an intruder with a gun is probably slim because if I had one I sure as heck wouldn’t be storing the bullets and the gun together. That last part I lived through when I was a child. Someone broke down our backdoor and as my mom was loading the gun with bullets the intruder grabbed her, took the gun, shot at us with the two bullets she had loaded and then used the gun to beat my mother with. Thankfully we both lived because a neighbor came running over when he heard the shots and scared the guy off. I am happy to say that i have not had another experience like that but I think my time would probably be better spent calling the police and heading out the other door or barricading myself in another room rather than standing my ground.
12 July, 2015 at 11:14 pm #526636I’ve seen the” Blush Spider (Arachnius gluteus) is hiding under toilet lids” story and the “KFC fed me a rat” story circulating recently on some of my “friends” Facebook feeds.
Closer to home for me is the Jade Helm craziness going on. 50% of Texans believe that the Jade Helm military exercise is just a ruse to enable the Federal Government to sneak in and take over. I can totally understand their fear that the federal government would want to come in and steal this gem of a state what with it’s low ranking in education and high ranks in poverty. Ha, won’t I feel like a dummy if they really do!

I don’t see politicians tightening up gun laws anytime soon here in the US much less banning them, even-though, according to the NRA’s batsh@% crazy minions Obama has been plotting and conniving to pry every last gun from their hands, if only. I currently live in Texas and if it wasn’t bad enough our new whack job of a Governor, Greg Abbott, just signed a bill to make open carry legal here. ](*,) You have the money and no felonies you can pretty much get a gun here.
