I ran the spybot and it failed to find the minibug, i then uninstalled IE6 and then ran the bot again – still no minibug.

You suggested that im not uninstalling all of the IE6 – how do i make sure that i am? All i can do is go to add and remove programs – click internet explorer 6 sp1 and internet tools, click remove and then choose restore previous windows confuration.

Is there more I should be doing?

I then re-installed IE6 – ran spybot again – and still have the same problem.

I have noticed in the list of programs this – Internet Explorer Q891781 – should i uninstall this??????

Oh how i wish i wasnt such a pc div !! lol

PB, my fault i did’nt see Daves post, when you choose to restore previous windows configuration your basically rolling back to the previous IE installation. In Daves case his previous installation was IE5.

Dave you need to to follow the above tutorial and remove all files/folders/registry keys relevant to IE6 using tune-up. You will then be able to do a 100% fresh install.

If the problem persists after you followed the above instructions Dave i think you are infected with some sought of malware or BHO.

I do not understand the ”restore previous windows configuration” option. My understanding of Super’s solution was that you remove IE 6.0 (and any and ALL previous versions that you may have lurking around on your PC) and any and all component parts, add ons, upgrades etc etc. Restoring Windows to its previous configuration would surely simply undo the uninstall???

The basic issue is that you apperar to have some sort of corruption in your version of IE OR you have a virus / worm / malware that is stuffing it up.

The solution is to totally remove it, disinfect your PC and then re-install it in a ”clean’ envirinment. The re-boot referred to is a part of completing the uninstal process. If you do not re-boot after every stage then there is a possibility that the uninstall will not be fully completed.

I’m not quiet getting you here? are you talking about why i got Dave to start the comp in diagnostic mode? Well the reason for that is so he could remove the Minibug, when you run a comp in diagnostic (basic drivers and services) mode, malware, spyware and other nasties are’nt allowed to start running via there start up keys. This is why Dave could not remove the Minibug because Norton cannot force an uninstall from this Minibug whilst the Minibug program is in use. By only running the basics Norton or a spyware prog that recognises this mini bug will be able to uninstall the none running Minibug.

    Hello Dave.

Well it appears that you have’nt fully deleted IE6. Even when you delete IE6 you still leave some registry keys behind and once you re-install IE these registry keys then become valid to the new installation, hence why your still having these probs. You need to download a registry cleaner http://www.tune-up.com do a software app called tune up utilities 2004 and you can get a free 30 day trial from them. I suggest you uninstall IE again including all IE updates found in the add/remove programs (start>control panel>add remove programs), reboot and run Tune UP. Under the ‘clean up’ tab on tune up utilities app is a registry cleaner that will remove all parts of the current IE installation, run this tool. Now reboot and re-install IE as instructed in the above tutorials. This will be a 100% clean install then.

The tutorials i posted above are the exact way Microsoft recommend un-installing and re-installing any IE installation.

I have recommended Tune-up to users on this forum who have all been very pleased with the results.

Thanks super – I have Norton 2005 and its found adware minibug but its not deleting or putting it in quarantine just giving me the option to not be told about it again !! – great use that is.

But I still tried the uninstalling and installing of explorer 6 – but yet again im having the same problem.

This is seriously peeing me off now !!

Dave download this adware program http://www.lavasoft.com/support/download/ install it and make sure you get the adaware personal as its free and update the definition file for this program and reboot.

Now click start>run and in the run dialouge box type msconfig you should now have a system configuration utility appear. Under the GENERAL tab, select the radio button that says diagnostic start up – load basic devices and services only, now click the apply button and then close the system configuration utility. Your computer should now ask you to restart click restart.

Your computer should now start in diagnostic mode. Now run Lavasoft that i got you to download earlier. Lavasoft should now remove that minibug no problem. Im thinking this minibug has something to do with your problem. If Lavasoft removes the minibug go throught the IE repair procedure again.

WARNING: You can run Norton in diagnostic mode but i know Nortons got a habit of corrupting itself when ran in safe/diagnostic mode.

Once you finished running in diagnostic mode click start>run>and type msconfig in the dialouge box now select the normal startup radio button click apply exit and reboot to restart normally

Dont worry it’s easily corrected Dave. If you have Spybot and a good AV client run these first then check these tutorials out. Follow these instructions step by step.

If IE repair fails and your still getting the same symptoms you now have three choices your going to have to either have your installation disc handy or d/l a new copy of IE and save it on your computer, i recommend you download IE. You can get IE from the link below. Or when you uninstall your current IE installation your computer rolls back to the previous IE installlation you can update IE through the Windows update site.

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1e1550cb-5e5d-48f5-b02b-20b602228de6&displaylang=en

Now that you downloaded and saved IE your going to have uninstall your current version. Heres a tutorial at the link below.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/293907/EN-US/

Now reboot and install the IE that you downloaded and saved onto your computer. After installing IE reboot and remeber to visit the Microsoft update center and install all available updates.
