    I’m really close tonight
And I feel like I’m moving inside her
    Lying in the dark
And I think that I’m beginning to know her
    Let it go
I’ll be there when you call

And whenever I fall at your feet
You let your tears rain down on me
    Whenever I touch
    Your slow turning pain..

    You’re hiding from me now
There’s something in the way that you’re talking
    Words don’t sound right
But I hear them all moving inside you
    No..
I’ll be waiting when you call..

And whenever I fall at your feet
You let your tears rain down on me
    Whenever I touch
    Your slow turning pain..
The finger of blame has turned upon itself
And I’m more than willing to offer myself
Do you want my presence or need my help
Who knows where that might lead..
    I fall..

Whenever I fall at your feet
Won’t you let your tears rain down on me
    Whenever I fall..
    At your feet..
    Whenever I fall..

    A Very Sad day..
A huge loss for the world of football, for these islands culturally, and of course – most significantly – for his family and friends.

George Best was an icon. A footballing wizard. A genius and innovator. In my opinion he is the greatest footballer that ever lived.

Seeing and hearing all the tributes paid to him this evening from across the footballing spectrum brought a tear to my eye. For the impact of this massive talent not only banished many a divide in the field of sport, but also crossed the most bitterest of barriers within his native homeland.
I recall growing up in Dublin in the early to mid-seventies, kicking a ball about… Every young lad wanted to be George Best.. the lad born on “the other side” as it were. The East Belfast boy who wryly confessed to throwing stones at Catholics as a youngster… So what? Nobody cared! “Georgie” was The Man :)

A curious hybrid of ultra-confidence yet at times polite reserve.. his many instances of self deprecating Irish wit were a joy to behold. Sky Sports News put together a lovely little montage of such nuggets this evening.. and one that stands out was George’s defence of Video Evidence in football matches.. They say people won’t stand for video evidence, but they also said people wouldn’t stand for all-seater stadiums or words to that effect  …. Classic.

The ugly side was of course there for all to see. The tragic self destruction and the utter devastation of those near and dear that too frequently preys on the lives of extraordinary talent. The wasteful alcoholic disease that led to his cry of “I’m so sorry I just can’t help myself”… and quite understandably to tears of pity and howls of indignation in equal measure from many.

I certainly echo the sentiment of hope that he finds the peace now in Rest that was rarely found in life.

I think it is a measure of Keane’s arrogance that he believes he can just swan into a team that (in my opinion) does not really require him at the mo. Many of course could argue that any team could do with “a Keane” as it were.. but I would have to disagree.

Superb player that he was.. methinks that the qualities Keane exemplified in his early and middle career have led to his ultimate undoing in recent times. Replacing his decline on the pitch with a sharp increase in the verbal department has certainly reaped it’s rewards.

His abominable treatment of Mick Mc Carthy (and indeed the Republic of Ireland’s National team and it’s supporters) in Saipan was expertly fluffed over as dear old Roy’s passionate response to inefficiencies in training methods , preparation, facilities.. etc etc. What we tend to forget is that Keane lined out for Man Utd mere weeks before and played nursing an injury that could have only got worse. But such is life… and one’s club pays one’s wages.

But it is not without a great deal of irony, and poetic justice that Alec Ferguson – the very man who Keane ran to like a lapdog, promptly dispensed with him late last week for what probably seems some of the very same reasons – ie Criticising his fellow professionals and manager in a most public and caustic fashion. I would not call this Passionate Professionalism.. but more like a trundling loose cannon that has lost quite a lot of it’s spark.

Roy Keane was an extraordinary footballer. A true leader on the pitch, an immense influence for Club and Country. But, alas.. “cometh the hour, cometh the man”….

Juventus would indeed seem an obvious choice, and I would’nt argue on that one. But I do have a sneaking suspicion that Arsenal may go a very long way this year… and I think that Liverpool will exceed many expectations once again.. and reach the semi-finals at least.

Some classics mentioned there! :) .. And I certainly agree with most of them! In particular It’s A Wonderful Life, Scrooged, The Wizard Of Oz and Die Hard :)

Another few that come to mind would be the legendary Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory :P with Gene Wilder’s splendid histrionics and some great music! The recent “remake” by Tim Burton was a noble effort with Johnny Depp in marvellous “Jacko-esque” fiendish form – but the early 70s version still does it for me!
Shamefully.. I was also a huge fan of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang  .. a film that always got an airing at Xmas over here (though not so much in recent years) and still sports THE most scary creature EVER to appear on celluloid – ie that awful “Childcatcher” creature with the horrible pointy nose urggggh :?
Others I recall enjoying as a child would be the wonderful Marx Brothers collections shown late at night (mostly on BBC2 methinks) and the classic Some Like It Hot

On a more erm.. umm… Adult front, the superb Trading Places always raises a guffaw!.. And I recall a bold and brave move by CH4 some years back in attempting to air the Python Boys’ masterpiece The Life Of Brian one Christmas evening … can’t remember if they actually got away with it.. methinks I was already in drunken coma by then!

I recently saw Bad Santa on dvd… and I must admit it was great fun :) … not for the easily offended, and definitely not family viewing, it is nonetheless a hilarious romp, with Billy Bob Thornton in sparkling form as a washed up, alcoholic, nihilistic Santa-come-burglar. Irreverent and cynical and as foul mouthed as can be.. it is worth a look!

I like relaxing to Classical music mostly.. chilling out to Debussy, Chopin, Gorecki, Mozart.. certain works by the Main Man Ludwig Van are quite chill-worthy too (despite his somewhat unfair reputation for being too heavy and boisterous!)… I suppose I could go so far as saying Sibelius too.. but he was from Finland, just a tad too chilly for me!

I love opera – a big Maria Callas fan…and at this time of year I always enjoy digging out Puccini’s La Boheme.. a lovely serene and seasonal piece of work.. and not as heavy handed or nut-bustingly screechy as some operas are in parts.

I am also a huge jazz fan… not the madcap stuff.. but some of the cooler classics such as Miles Davis’ Kind Of Blue … I do like Miles very much – together with most of Dave Brubeck’s and Thelonious Monk’s works.

Certain Sting songs and albums, Leonard Cohen, Simon and Garfunkel..

Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, and Lady Ella are also always top of my “chill-list”.. as are the supreme soundtracks from Blade Runner, Vanilla Sky, The Mission and Gladiator

    To name but a few..
