Don’t know how i missed this thread before.

It’s confuddled, alright. What a palaver. In my opinion state and church should be distinctly separated, and the Government should think twice before trying to tell the church what to do.

If a in institution feels unable to recognize a gay marriage then surely that’s up to them. I think it shows a clear lack of the understanding of modern society, but churches have hardly been known for being aligned with the zeitgeist. Not recognizing a gay union is not the same as expelling gay members of your congregation (which would be discriminatory). Let the believers vote with their feet.

The news in the run up to Christmas is not filling me with the right sort of festive cheer, that’s for sure.

Easy access to guns makes it easier for those who – for whatever reason – have impaired decision making processes to cause wanton destruction. Sure guns don’t kill people but guns make it easier for to kill.

I’ve always found the right to bear arms defence a tad problematic because there is a direct correlation between this type of crime and access to guns.

But it’s a difficult thing for any stateside political administration to take on: the gun lobby is extremely powerful and it’s possible to have some understanding for anyone who wants to have a gun at home to protect their family from other people who have guns. The latter is a classic competitive action problem, because the more you liberate access to guns, the more you need to be better protected against them.

It would be a great Christmas present if this has been the catalyst for a change of political opinion regarding gun ownership. And at least Obama doesn’t need to appease anyone in order to win an election, which might fortify his and others will to do something about it.

She had children to care for..she had no right to take herself away from them, especially over this issue.

I remember when I lived in Hackney; a young woman took her small child in her arms and threw herself from her small flat at the top of the tower block.

Things get bad, sometimes very bad, for many of us. When you have people who need you, you have no right to take the quick exit.

Don’t think we can look at this from a point of being right or wrong, really. What is clear though is that whatever issues / concerns / worries she had, they clearly appeared to be unsurmountable, and not all of us are blessed with wherewithal to overcome certain things. And we simply don’t know how we will tackle a situation until we confront it.

But like you and others have said, it’s a grave loss for her family and friends. It’s a sorry state of affairs however you look at it.
