I did look and did find your useful website interesting, but as my bookmarks are more ‘special interest’ in nature (for example, kentyluscious.com) I didn’t think it was appropriate to post.

I few years ago I made a capricious decision to see this chap live purely based on my liking for the Norwegian label he happened to be signed to…. And then he sang this

I’m not sure if this is technically qawali singing but it also reminds me of the late great Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

You’ve made me pull out the big guns now, and I don’t think there are many things more emotionally charged than Gorecki’s Symphony No.3. If you don’t know it then I implore you to seek out the complete work, because as wonderful as this extract is, out of context of the whole symphony you’ll be lacking quite a bit and when it gets to the third movement you’ll be wiping away tears like a lachrymose man with a severe eye infection.

Jacques Brel…one ugly mug, amazing singer-songwriter, this with English subtitiles, heartreaking as he begs his love not to leave him, promises that if she just stays one day, one night, she will experience love in all its magic

OMGA (oh my giddy aunt), browny points aplenty for Scep. Totally agree and I often direct people to this very video when they say things like, ‘did you watch xfactor last night? didn’t you think one-direction were brilliant and what a performance?’ (Truth be told, I’ve no idea if one-direction are X-factor fodder, and it’s relatively easy and poor form to pick on them, but you get my drift).

I love chanson and I love Jacque Brel. a fine choice. I’ll have to ponder a while to see what I can conjure as a suitable riposte to this one.

but, rusty, you have been sonically seduced :)

Less of the backtalk, Mr Scep and more of the video links please. Gimme more to explore and discover.

Although I’m not the biggest velvet underground fan, or of Warhol for that matter, I’ve always been intrigued by Nico’s story since a watched a film about her life a good few years ago. I didn’t know that she lived with the Bard of Salford though, that fact seemed to have eluded me, so thanks for that.

On the very rare occasion when I plucked up the necessary wherewithal to introduce a coy and impressionable damsel to my music collection, I’d probably play These Days by Nico.

Other songs that I would play might include the following:

Joni Mitchell – Both Sides Now

Shirley Horn – You Won’t Forget Me

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1HYbSFBYak

Gil Scott Heron – I’ll Take Care of You

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADoCh8HfdKM

If she’s still around and I’m sufficiently confident that she has been lulled into a false sense of security, I’d probably play some Fela Kuti, Gogol Bordello and New Order. And if she’s still around, I should be looking for a wedding ring…

… As you can obviously tell, I’m not particularly skilled in the art of sonic seduction.

I now have two cut throats. They’re from Solingen, in Germany, which is the classic centre for these lethal instruments. They are very old – 1930s – but extremely sharp – and by that I mean bloody sharp, but I am about to get a strop.

They’re getting very popular because of the James Bond film, Skyfall, which itself jumped on the back of the growing obsession with retro. The future Moneypenny uses one to shave 007.

I liked the comment of the son of the author of the above article.

Any future Moneypennys want to shave me???? :)

You’d probably do a Castlereagh* on me, but all genuine applications considered :D/

*Castlereagh was the Foreign Secretary whose career was suddenly ended when his cut throat slipped, back in 1822

I’d be interested in finding out where you got them from, brother scep. I have an interest in cut-throat razors and gentlemen’s barbering. Have you heard of Mr Natty? or Triumph and Disaster?

You’re right to imply that Skyfall has had some impact on the new interest in traditional shaving, but it’s been growing for quite some time prior to that film.
