that’s a perceptive comment about Terry, Kenty. I hope he returns, and that he hasn’t lost his old fire.

I think the main problem about serious discussion is that most people are timid, and fear not being able to make their points clearly enough, or that they’ll run into ridicule. Ridicule can be a powerful weapon (like lurve) with which to dominate an argument, and I can use it too when I feel the need to deflate someone.

Best to just mix it and not get too involved, I guess.

But Brits find it hard to have a serious discussion. Easier to shout past one another.

I quite agree. I often don’t get into serious discussions because I usually only know the fluffly top layer stuff. That’s not to say I would like to reply sometimes but I don’t. Like on the boards sometimes, when you cleverer guys are discussing somthing…there maybe a small bit where I would like to have a say but I don’t because quite frankly I probably would collapse if it was fired back at me with a question 8-[
As for shouting past one another…ain’t that the truth
FO is commonly used, or should I say used by a commoner.

Oh, I’m not having that clever chaps comment fly, Kenty. You’re a very smart contributor and often say very thought-provoking stuff.

Good to see you back, Martin. Don’t let the comments you don’t like get to you this time.

to be honest, i’m in no position to be picky about the hue, shape, other dimensions, or predilictions, come to think of it, of a maiden

Lol. well spotted. never let it be said that I can’t be perked by even the most fleeting promise of a fair maiden.

Scep, you’re off the welcoming committee, mate. Stick to posting about obscure songs and stuff. (Congrats on the new job btw if i’m reading that correctly).

Sorry, squire, (and I say this to someone I quite like and respect, Rusty) but chat is about free speech – it’s not unlicenced speech, and I avoid some of the real nastiness I’ve seen form some of the ‘nice’ people here, but I’ll contribute when and where I want, I’m afraid. In fact, I’ll insist on it.

There is no requirement for me to respond to e-mails from people I dislike quite strongly, and I’ll avoid trading insults which would lead to a stupid and never-ending argument (we all have memories of that!), but I’ll talk about any subject I wish to talk about. I’ve done nothing wrong (I may have said some things that some people don’t like, but that’s another question.

I would like to talk about serious topics of current affairs, historical discussion, poetry etc etc and when it arises I can enjoy the rough and tumble (Terry recovering?). The Happy Birthday brigade irritate me as I must more than irritate them, but that’s how it is. A lot of different people, with varying moods – we talk as we please.

It’s called free speech. And I’m saying this, Rusty, to a man who probably agrees with me 100%, even if he does like Gorecki. Got to be said, at times, though, mate

ps my job isn’t new – it’s 27 years I’ve had it lol, it always starts at this time of year

Too tired to try to muster some kind of clever response. Totally agree with you, Scep. I’ve commented on the responsibilities of free speech elsewhere on these boards and i’m loathe to start that up again. I’ve commented on the responsibilities of free speech elsewhere and I’m disinclined to start that old chestnut again (but I agree).

Thanks for the respect bit, I’d respect you more if you weren’t such a hard nosed philistine who refuses to be moved by Gorecki’s plea to humanity. (I can say this with my tongue firmly in my cheek, knowing that you’ll either think it’s just another weak attempt to be funny or that i’m a veritable ass and it doesn’t warrant a response, which sort of illustrates the point i was trying to make more than the point I was trying to make).

Sorry Rusty, but I am going to stand up for myself in my own way. Too many people on the net seem to delight in trying to get one over other people. I had my idea for the introduction thread from another message board and that worked extremely well. I have had trouble on other message boards before – someone felt slighted for no apparent reason and spent the next couple of months hounding me – and I wouldn’t want to go through that again.

    Best wishes

    Martin

I’m all for people standing up for themselves, Martin. You seem to have got me wrong, which kind of illustrates my point about things are inclined to be taken the wrong way on here.

It takes a bit of time to understand the nuances of other people’s humour on here, which is perhaps why one shouldn’t get too bent out of shape when someone says, ‘is he for real?’ Did scep mean anything by that comment, which seemed fairly innocuous to me, who knows, but if i try to put it into some sort of historical context I have to say I don’t think he intended any great offence.

If you enjoy chatting here, and you seem like the kind of exuberant fellow we should relish, then it might be a good idea to be a bit more thick skinned and save the disdain for those who are perhaps more worthy of it. Stick around and see for yourself. (Just a thought.)

On a positive note a good few people took the time to welcome you on this board, which goes to show that we’re a civilized bunch of people some of the time.

There’s an existing introduction thread somewhere on the boards btw, but i think a few of us, myself notwithstanding prefer the anonymity.

If you choose to stick around you will notice that this is very indicative of my long-winded approach to posting where i use ten words to do a job that could adequately be addressed by two. I guess i’m trying to say in my own sleep-inducing way: FGS! there’s hardly a battle to be had here. Ignore the comment, post to your hearts content – and expect replies that you’re not going to like.

I wasn’t going to stick my two pence worth in this because i couldn’t get past the incredulity, but then I remembered how much i like sticking my two pence in.

Scep, you’re off the welcoming committee, mate. Stick to posting about obscure songs and stuff. (Congrats on the new job btw if i’m reading that correctly).

Martin, stay or go. That’s up to you but much of what is said on here runs the risk of being misinterpreted – and that includes your comments – with a bit of diligent forethought before you reply or take the hump, you can often tell if someone is really being nasty.

Netty, you can be the a woman of 1000s identities with photos to match, I’ll still swoon.

And finally, we really need some new board activity! I suspect Martingate would never have happened if there was other stuff to read.
