Gurkhas vote – The people 1 Gordon Brown 0.

So democracy is not totally dead in this country after all. Though I understand that Gordon Brown was trying to stifle it in the voting lobby with his henchmen. Well done to Nick Clegg for putting forward this motion for a better deal for our Gurkhas. And well done to all those MPs that showed Gordon Brown just how wrong he was on this subject.

MPs voted by 267 to 246 in favour of the LibDem motion to extend an equal right of residence to all Gurkhas.

Ghurkas don’t tend to vote labour, don’t tend to become benefit junkies and don’t fit into New labours drone class, what did you expect to happen?

This is ‘don’t worry about it’ from the same government who brought you ‘hot tea gives you cancer’ and all the other remote possibilities you might die from at some unspecified time in the future. This is from the government whose health and safety brigade ban kettles from common rooms in case someone burns themselves, and put up posters advising you of the best way to pick something up. Barbecue? Oh dear no, you might get bowel cancer in fifty years. Swine flu going global in days? Nah, don’t worrry about it.

Arguably, whatever their past histories, these two men have probably prevented a lot of killings in the last ten years plus by becoming part of the peace process. Same goes for any of the loyalist former extremists who gave peace a chance.

So the evil they committed is outweighed by the (possible) good they’ve done recently?

Why do I find it hard to care

The past can’t be changed, but the future can. Surely a solution whatever the past is better in the long run.

I’m sure the dissident republicans will listen hard and consider your argument

It’s not me you have to convince, to my mind Adams and McGuiness are loathsome politicians who have advocated policies that the majority of the population of Northern Ireland do not desire, but that’s their right. Now if it were loyalists gunning for McGuiness then that would change things, however it’s not, it’s ostensibly those who are on the same side as McGuiness. So, if McGuiness is in danger from dissident republicans is it too much to ask that they do a proper job and take Adams out with him?

and keep increasing taxes for the rich ( sorry melody )

God, socialists just don’t get it do they?

You see, when you hit the rich like this it doesn’t benefit the poor or the working class at all. It comes down the line and hits everyone on the way. The billionaire becomes a mere millionaire – big deal. The guy just over the breadline, who worked for the bilionaire, is now workless and therefore below the breadline.

That’s something socialists will never grasp. These rich people don’t keep all that money and gloat over it, Scrooge-like, by candlelight in vaulted dungeons. They spend it. They pay people to do things they can’t be bothered doing themselves – cooking, cleaning, fixing leaky pipes, painting, and so on. All those working people are paid to do that stuff by the rich folk.

When you destroy the rich, you destroy everyone who works for them.

The Butchers Apron (Union Jack) is the British flag and part of the reason why England is such as it is when terms like British and English get confused in the minds of many. As far as I’m concerned the sooner we liberate England from Britain the better.

If you do nowt wrong what ya gotta worry about

Who decides what’s wrong? The government? The courts?

The problem with this sort of legislation is that it usually ends up being used for purposes its legislators didn’t imagine like the RIPA (Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act ) act. Which was brought in to combat terrorism yet got used by local councils to spy on parents they thought might be sending their kids to a school outside their cachement area, as well as dog fouling and littering. It allows for The Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, The Food Standards Agency, The Intervention Board for Agricultural Produce, The Post Office and the NHS to spy on you if they want too.

So…………………… it might be ok for you to believe that if you do “nowt” wrong you have nothing to worry about, but the evidence doesn’t seem to back you up when it comes down to what the government actually does.
