xx3 October, 2012 at 9:30 pm #511905Point 1: Whether he is innocent or guilty of the alleged abuse, he is no longer here to defend himself. (This goes against what we expect from the justice system in our developed country.) Could that be why the media are making such a huge story?
Point 2: Young people very frequently keep quiet about abuse (from embarrassment/fear/feelings of guilt), then as they get older they do not want to bring the events up again for similar reasons.
Social attitudes in the 70s were quite different to attitudes today and such matters were often swept under the carpet by adults and others in positions of responsibility.Point 3: A question for the celebrities who “heard the rumours” (Paul Gambaccini, Esther Rantzen etc) …. why did you not speak out? Especially if you went on to found Childline?

I find this shocking on so many levels.
That a hospital can place a DNR on a patient without discussing it with them or their family.
That the DNR can be purely on the grounds of disability.
That the DNR can be placed on a patient with little or no knowledge of that person’s quality of life. But also…
How can someone like Tony Nickelson, Diane Petty and all the others like them, people who were profoundly disabled yet mentally capable and felt their quality of life was untenable, be refused the right to die yet doctors can decide to impose a DNR on someone who seems to be content with their quality of life simply because of their disabilities?
I too found this very disturbing. DNR should always be discussed – either with the individual concerned or with their family if they are incapable of making the decision. Surely it should only be used in exceptional circumstances?
