You would have to be an absolute basketcase to believe any of the september 11 conspiracy theory stuff. It’s as loopy as all that Roswell/alien abduction drivel. Once you start believing that nonsense it won’t be long before you start wearing tin-foil hats to stop the CIA from reading your brainwaves.
13 July, 2006 at 1:40 pm #230092It’s a documented fact that European countries and the USA provided Saddam with everything he needed to build WMDs. Your attitude seems to be “we sold him the stuff, but isn’t it outrageous that he actually used it”. A responsible barman wouldn’t sell booze to someone who was already drunk, a responsible gunstore owner wouldn’t sell a gun to a lunatic, yet our governments saw fit to sell weapons of mass destruction to a homicidal maniac.
Getting back to the point, the war was supposedly aimed at setting the downtrodden free which isn’t the usual objective of a military occupation and yet we see coalition troops carrying out terrible abuses on the people they are supposed to be freeing from injustice.
What worries me is the reluctance to hold to account any coalition soldier that abuses his power. We have no problem pointing the finger at other countries and saying how terrible they are but when one of our own does it we just say “bad things happen in war, it’s not an easy job”. When a wrongdoer is prosecuted it’s usually the lowest possible rank and they usually just get a slap on the wrist.
12 July, 2006 at 7:46 pm #229779Italian players are always diving or cheating in some way. That’s why the non-Italians in the stadium were booing when Italy went up to collect the trophy, because they saw how Materazzi orchestrated Zidane’s sending off. I can’t remember a world cup final where the winning team was booed before and I can’t remember one where most people thought the winners were second best on the day.
Italy were lucky that their equalizer wasn’t disallowed, that France wasn’t awarded a second penalty, that Vieira and Henry had to be subbed and that Materazzi provoked Zidane into being sent off. They took good penalties but there was only 1 team in it from the start of the second half onwards.
“Fortunata Italia” would be a better title for this thread.

Either way, the law is clear in the fact that Israel has no legitimate claim to the occupied territories. So even if you don’t think the Palestinians are the original inhabitants it doesn’t change the fact that Israel shouldn’t be in the West Bank.
…… and yet Mr B , there they are – and there they stay. Anyway if they left the West Bank, it would then provide another base from which the Hamas terrorists could launch even more Quassam rockets at them.
Of course Hamas would have to claim that they were provoked into killing women and babies, but then they are pretty experienced at using this justification for terrorist murder already.
So they are building settlements to stop terrorist attacks? Yeah right! As long as Israel is on palestinian land killing and persecuting palestinian civilians then they should stop with all the whining on tv about being attacked. How can it be acceptable for Israel to murder palestinian women and children? Murder is murder and the killing of civilians by either side is unacceptable. I know you have trouble with this concept PB because you think Israel is as pure as the driven snow.
Israel is the biggest destabilizing element in that region and the sooner it leaves the occupied territories the better it will be for everyone. I have no sympathy for the settlers, they need build their Israeli settlements inside Israel not on their neighbour’s land.
12 July, 2006 at 7:18 pm #230088The point is that these things shouldn’t be happening. A 14 year old girl raped and murdered by the “liberators” of Iraq. I don’t support the death penalty but the accused soldiers could be put to death and they would deserve it. In all probability, they will probably get off with a light sentence. Now you know why the USA didn’t want to sign up to the international criminal court. It doesn’t want its own soldiers to face real justice. How many senior military people went to prison over abu ghraib? None.
As for the gassing of the Kurds, Saddam couldn’t have gassed anybody if the West hadn’t provided him with chemical weapons.
12 July, 2006 at 12:12 am #224933Phoenicians originated from Lebanon or Syria. The Canaanites lived in ancient Palestine. The 2 areas overlap but I think Phoenicians are considered ancient Lebanese rather than ancient Palestinian. I think the Canaanites mixed with the later inhabitants and so it does make sense to say that the Palestinians descended from the original inhabitants.
Either way, the law is clear in the fact that Israel has no legitimate claim to the occupied territories. So even if you don’t think the Palestinians are the original inhabitants it doesn’t change the fact that Israel shouldn’t be in the West Bank.

every penalty of italys was un stopable
Italy beat germany, somthing argintina could’nt do, no excuses can be given, Italy were solid at the back, and organised.. just because they did’nt show attacking football, does not mean they did’nt deserve to be world champions
Italy stole the cup. France were robbed. Argentina only lost because their manager, Pekerman (an appropriate name), took off Riquelme and Crespo, didn’t bring on Saviola or Messi and tried to hang on to a 1 goal lead. The manager blew it for argentina not the players.
France was the better team in the final, they should have got a second penalty and the Italian equalizer probably shouldn’t have stood. It was daylight robbery.
11 July, 2006 at 8:31 pm #224931Israel has a mandate to exist but it has no right to the Occupied territories. I have no problem with Israel apart from its actions towards the palestinians. I believe in a 2 state solution and because there is already such a symbiosis between Israelis and Palestinians, I can envisage a day in the very distant future when Palestinians and Israelis live together peacefully in a unified state. Of course, there has to be 2 established states before there can be a unified state and that’s the first step.
10 July, 2006 at 11:53 pm #229772France lost 3 of their best penalty takers and that’s why Italy won. They were unworthy winners in my opinion, France was the only side that looked like scoring a 2nd goal before penalties.
I also disagree about there not being an outstanding team. Argentina were the best team in the tournament but their manager made a massive blunder in the game against germany and it cost them dearly. They were the side that looked most likely to win the cup.
10 July, 2006 at 11:44 pm #224927The only thing I’m accepting is that you keep getting your facts wrong and if you check back through your recent posts you’ll see that you’ve had to backtrack on the comments you’ve made.
As for the idea of militants being fuelled simply by Islamic extremism and a fanatical desire to wage jihad against the Jews, how do you explain the Christian and secular militants? Also you keep saying that Hamas will never accept a 2 state solution when quotes from the Hamas leadership suggest otherwise.
As I said before, the term terrorism could equally apply to some of the actions of the Israeli government. If you disagree then point out to me what the difference is. I know for sure that you will avoid the question because you know that there is no difference in the atrocities carried out by the IDF and those carried out by Hamas except for the fact that the IDF can do it on a larger scale and more frequently.
