Israel went into Lebanon to root out the PLO in 1982 and this invasion spawned Hizbollah. There is no defence for what Israel is doing, they have sophisticated weapons and are capable of precision strikes yet we’re seeing strike after strike against clearly civilian targets, killing scores of totally innocent civilians. These are war crimes so it’s not just hizbollah that should be criticized. Until recently, Hizbollah was only involved in minor skirmishes over disputed territory following the withdrawal by Israel in 2000. This doesn’t sound like a “genocidal” group. It was events in Gaza that sparked Hizbollah into taking action.
Hamas came into existence during the first uprising against the Occupation in 1987, so yet again we see that Israel’s military presence on Arab land spawned one of their deadliest enemies. If Israel had taken steps to implement resolution 242 in 1967 then Hamas and Hizbollah would probably not exist now. Israel rejected a peace deal offered by the Arab League a few years ago. It rejects the idea of an international peace keeping or monitoring force in the occupied territories, it rejects the road-map without it being amended with several preconditions and it has tried to reject the Geneva convention saying it doesn’t apply in the Occupied Territories.
If the definition of terrorism is the use of military force against innocent civilians then Israel is guilty of terrorism too. Israel is acting as a law unto itself. It makes no effort to observe international law. Israel was told almost 40 years ago to leave the arab territory it took in the 6 day war instead it continued to annex more land. Israel has thousands of arab prisoners many of whom have never been charged let alone convicted of any crime.
The IDF has no concern for the lives of Arab civilians, something that has been displayed in the Palestinian territories for decades. It was also shown when Israel bombed the UN compound in Lebanon in the 1990s killing around 100 refugees. Not to mention the massacres at Sabra and Shatilla which Ariel Sharon allowed to happen. The barbarity of Israel towards arab populations is what fuels militancy. If you were Lebanese, how would you feel about Israel?
Israel needs to sit down with the arabs and hammer out a comprehensive deal to resolve all outstanding issues and finally bring about an end to this conflict. There is no alternative to a negotiated settlement. There is no military solution to this conflict.
17 July, 2006 at 5:37 pm #229648It’s hard not be flippant when faced with such a ridiculous idea. So now you’re saying that the WhiteHouse created a phantom flight with phantom passengers so that they could say a plane hit the Pentagon. So now the air traffic controllers must be in on the conspiracy too. Don’t you think air traffic control would be able to tell if there was any plane or not? Wouldn’t they have said something already if there was no plane? I’m sure that you would be able to get the full list of people who died aboard the flight that hit the Pentagon with a quick web search.
The idea of a conspiracy is just nonsense.
16 July, 2006 at 11:03 am #230708The danger is that our ships or vehicles transporting evacuees to our ships will be attacked by the trigger-happy Israelis. There is also the danger of our ships being mistaken for an Israeli warship.
The Israeli government is positive that it is only targetting Hizbollah and not targetting civilians. This must mean that Hizbollah was running Beirut International airport and the lighthouse near the port. The Israeli ambassador to the UN even made the extraordinary claim that civilian homes are being used as launchpads for Hizbollah rockets. The idea of katyusha rockets being launched from somebody’s living room sounds like bullsh1t to me. No doubt people will believe him though.
I think our government and other EU governments should demand a ceasefire so that our people can be evacuated safely. Israel does a lot of trade with the EU and they would listen to us if we put our foot down. Unfortunately it looks like the EU and especially Tony Blair are sucking up to America again (with the notable exception of France).
With regard to the Jews, there was a Jewish minority in Palestine for several centuries, long before the creation of Israel in the 1940s. So it’s not accurate to say that they are all european or from neighbouring Arab states. Israel has a mandate to exist but its occupation of arab land beyond israel’s borders, its detention of thousands of arab prisoners without charge and the persecution of palestinians is what causes so much friction in the region.

15 July, 2006 at 1:37 pm #230476What goes on at this muslim day that you are so annoyed about? I’d only be bothered if they had an Amish day at Alton Towers, where all the rides involved a horse and cart.
14 July, 2006 at 8:39 pm #229644I guess we only imagined seeing those planes hitting the WTC then. I mean really, the whole idea of a september 11 conspiracy is so absurd it’s not even worth reading about. If the Pentagon wasn’t hit by a plane then where did that flight disappear to? Oh, let me guess, it’s in Area 51 with the little green men.
14 July, 2006 at 8:33 pm #230459Mr Drivel I assure you I’m not making light of this. The affairs of Alton Towers are at the heart of our very way of life. If we don’t stand up for Alton Towers, next it will be Legoland Windsor. Why is Tony Blair off in Russia at the G8 summit when Britain is under such peril? You should only be allowed on the rides at Alton Towers if you can sing “Rock of Ages” or recite the Nicene creed.
13 July, 2006 at 7:57 pm #224937I started this thread over a month ago and I predicted back then that if the international community didn’t take immediate action then events could spiral out of control (as usual). I also predicted that the world wouldn’t act until things got really bad. Despite people telling me I was wrong, everything I said has come true.
There is now the danger of the conflict in Lebanon escalating and as that happens there is the very real threat of Syria being drawn into this conflict. Beyond that, these events and the sabre-rattling by Israel in their direction will probably only further convince Iran that they need to get nuclear weapons.
So despite President Bush telling us that the key to mideast stability was through establishing democracy in Iraq, we’ve seen that once again the arab-israeli conflict is the most destabilizing factor in the region.
13 July, 2006 at 7:47 pm #230094Iraq might be better off in the long-run with saddam gone. If things had be done differently then I would have no doubt. However, the incompetent post-war strategy has made the future of iraq very uncertain. I still maintain that with a budget of several billion dollars, Saddam could have been removed by other means.
Yes saddam did terrible things but if our troops start doing the same type of things then it makes a mockery of the “liberation”. I doubt that the Haditha massacre and the atrocity carried out on this 14 year old girl and her family will be the last we hear of coalition abuses. Of course coalition troops have a difficult job but none of them are conscripts, they are supposed to be professionals and as such they should behave professionally.
13 July, 2006 at 7:33 pm #230451Free tickets to Alton Towers? I’m surprised such a serious issue wasn’t brought up at prime minister’s questions. I suggest an immediate public inquiry into whether any candy floss was offered along with these free tickets.
