Basically you just need a cable to link the two PC’s together. There are different types of leads, depending on how fast you want to transfer or what ports you have available on your PC’s. I think I used USB to USB Laplink cable when I transfered my files [thanks to a colleague for lending it to me !] – you only have to use the new PC then, two windows come up, one showing your files on the old PC and one for the new – you just select the files you want to transfer over and it does the rest.
Anyway,whichever lead you choose you can then use the new PC to transfer files from the old one. You should get a window showing your files on the old PC and you can then click on the files you want to transfer them to the new one.
As long as you switch you old PC on, the lead should be able to read what is on there.
Windows XP has a Files Transfer Wizard but it asks you to download the wizard onto the old PC.
