Have to do something about my growing cyber death glow – there’s a world out there.
Anyone coming?
Nah – you probably reading this tommorrow or January!
Hmmmm….are us regular posters being ridiculed……..yet again?
If so…why? I post on these boards because I’m at work and I can…not that there is anything wrong with posting if you are not at work. It’s the nature of the boards……..to post.
How comes we don’t get ridiculed for being at work? :roll:Oh dear. Many apologies – didn’t think for one second I was ridiculing anyone, except maybe myself.
Just conscious of the fact that for the last couple of weeks (since I have been off work sick) I have spent too much time on the computer – thus the “growing cyber death glow”. Also realised as soon as I wrote it that it was stupid inviting anyone to come outside, as many people wouldn’t see the post for days.
Must engage brain before keyboard and stop being spontaneous online. :? Was genuinely so happy to see the sun!
Nah, I can’t take the mick out of anyone for hanging round here – what do you think I’ve been doing for the last couple of weeks? When I go back to work I will miss being able to log on here whenever I want, but hope I will still be able to annoy the pants of everyone when I am not at work. :)

7 November, 2010 at 9:15 am #451851You are entitled to your views Gaz, and we should all be careful about criticising cultures which are not our own.
I just hope that you never personally have to be subject to a system whose idea of justice is as fickle, arbitrary and unforgiving as the one you seem to advocate. I aint dissing your culture – or telling Iranians how to run their own country. It’s just that, as far as I can see, your own self-professed actions on these boards do not really fit in with any country’s laws nor do they promote peace amongst neighbours.
Sorry to be a little harsh mate , but it’s true.

Yes, we are all allowed to have a point of view about what happens outside our little island, just as those outside can have a point of view about us. What we shouldn’t be doing is imposing our will on other cultures or having the expectation that their idea of civilised is the same as ours.
That being said, I have always thought that the introduction of the death penalty in the UK is one of the few things I would go on the streets to demonstrate against (even though it seems that the majority of nice peace-loving British people would like to hanging return). If the state is the embodiment of our community, and is there to protect us, I do not think that taking life through the death penalty is justified. I do not believe in an eye for an eye. We need to demonstrate care even for the most damaged. Anger begets anger, fear begets fear, and hatred begets hatred.
One thing that confuses me though is – if you live somewhere, are committed to your community, and pay the taxes, do you not have the right to comment, participate and be heard? No need to have a racial origin outside the UK for that to be a problem. I am a white male and live in a part of the country I did not grow up in. That, in itself, is sometimes enough to stop you commenting or taking part fully because you are not the “real deal”. Sadly that is true to some extent almost everywhere in the world you go.
All views should be able to be expressed, even if they are not shared by the majority and not therefore welcomed by them. So often the people asked to “go home” were born here, as were their parents (and their parents before them). As such a British Asian or a British Muslim often has more right to demonstrate and be heard here in the UK than in, say, Pakistan. And if they are of Pakistani origin, despite the fact they may not pay Pakistani taxes, they of course, even as a British resident, have the right to support or to take a different view to the elected government of Pakistan, as many on these message boards have. The Pakistani government opposes the widespread introduction of Sharia Law for criminal cases and is committed to a very bloody war against the Taliban, in which many thousand more Pakistanis have died than the few British soldiers we grieve in Afghanistan. (I have family in the army so I do not say that lightly.) What works for Turkey doesn’t work for Iran or Malaysia. Does it all mean that there is no unified Muslim conspiracy against the West and no unified Western conspiracy against Muslims? Oh no – how could we all survive without all the suspicion and hatred? Perhaps without killing each other for a start.
I don’t agree with Sharia Law being introduced in the UK, except by full joint consent in civil matters, just like mediation as part of divorce. It is my right to have that view. What I do not wish to stop however is British people, of whatever race, expressing a view opposing mine and seeking the introduction of Sharia Law. Whether they are successful is, of course, another matter – but to demonstrate in a democratic country – that can’t be wrong.
Now that we can all feel the love in the room (yes, Darius Danesh did grow up just down the road from me), can I just say that I deplore the recently announced public spending cuts on the grounds that they will harm economic growth the most vulnerable in our society.
Cameron, Clegg, – GO HOME ! !
:lol:4 November, 2010 at 1:24 pm #451785I know what you mean about war, Cherriepie. I suppose when I said about not having to worry I was making a slightly cheap point about the recent armed services review, rather than staying on topic.
Sadly there are those who demonise other countries or exagerate their threat to justify war.
4 November, 2010 at 9:24 am #451781Not keen on stoning. In fact I don’t agree with the death penalty full stop, however plenty of countries out there practice it, including many states of the USA.
Am more concerned about the suppression of anti-government protests in Iran. If people are concerned about the lot of women in Iran, it is worth reflecting that internal political change is likely to make more difference than the Western governments or civil rights groups wagging a finger of disapproval.
People need to find their own way or it is just resented – often with widespread loss of life, as efforts at regime change have shown in recent years. I’d love to change the world to be the way I would like it but I don’t know whether that is possible or indeed desirable when it comes to someone else’s culture.
Wouldn’t worry too much about another war – or rather us starting it – we wont have the right armed forces soon anyway.
Oh dear – I appear to have turned into a tired old realist. Many apologies to those who still have the courage of their own convictions.
