I took my daughters to visit some of the Somme burial sites in Picardy, France. Even at their tender ages they understood the loss, I visited the Somme American Cemetery near Bony where some 1800 soldiers are laid to rest, 1000s of miles from home where maybe their own family have never visited. The most heart rendering of all is not seeing the ages of the soldiers but the graves marked ‘Known only unto God’ – so sad! On the hour every hour the tranquility of the countryside is broken when the speakers in the cemetery play out music from the era – its very surreal!
Tomorrow my daughter and the rest of her year are attending a memorial locally.
I shall wear my poppy with pride for them all.
awww thats very moving Melody xxx
