Off the blame game topic – I watched an interview with her uncle, who had just returned home, on the Scottish news which seemed a little odd. For one thing, he couldn’t stop smiling while he spoke about how upbeat her parents are. After, what, six days is it now?
It just seemed so bizarre. And the implication in one of the questions was basically ‘How could this have happened while she was being supervised?’ when it is quite obvious that she wasn’t being supervised.
9 May, 2007 at 4:32 pm #269756It bothers me too, especially when you think about all those people who would give their right arm to have a child and would gladly make all the sacrafices that have to be made.
I know and work with a lot of new parents, especially dads, and they all hold the belief that having a child changes your outlook on everything. It has to be said as well that I hear that more often from those that have a daughter, and I also hear more about being a protective parent from them as well.
9 May, 2007 at 2:18 pm #269753I read in the paper today that a British holidaymaker noticed someone acting very strangely while she was there – looking in windows, trying to walk off with pushchairs etc – but did not report it until she heard of Maddie’s dissapearance three weeks after she returned home. My neighbours have a lot of grandkids and there’s always someone keeping an eye on them be it family or other neighbours and anything remotely suspicious wouldn’t be ignored. I’d rather have egg on my face if it meant peace of mind.
But I don’t think that a spokesman saying something like ‘Had she alerted staff sooner, we could have followed it up’ helps. I’m sure she feels bad enough right now under the circumstances.
8 May, 2007 at 7:21 pm #269743I just saw on Sky Sports News that John Terry and I think it was Carvalhio (the Portugeese bloke) making an appeal, albeit I only caught the tail end of it. While I applaud such a gesture, I am baffled by it as I always am by these celeb appeals.
If someone does have information, do you honestly think they were sitting waiting for someone with a bit of status to nudge them in the right direction? I always think that these sort of appeals are a sad reflection on society.
8 May, 2007 at 11:10 am #269737I have to agree. While it probably looks as if it’s the most insensitive suggestion in the world to say that perhaps the parents should have been more responsible, it is also a painful truth whether people like it or not. Especially children of a certain age.
I also feel for the parents, but I know a lot people who have young kids who wouldn’t even dream of leaving their kids for that amount of time unsupervised or probably even in the care of a nanny come to that.
7 May, 2007 at 9:56 pm #269631I had actually started writing a different one, my personal favourite, but thought that under the circumstances (the wee girl going missing) it would be in extremely poor taste and you have to draw the line somewhere.

Breaking news on Sky Sports says that sources close to Allardyce claim he will be the next Newcastle manager. So what if he was criticized for making Bolton play ‘ugly’ football? It was effective and that’s what counts.
And if he can continue this trend he has of getting the best out of players, it would be a good appointment.
if you want to pay to see ugly football your a mug
I won’t be, they’re not my local team. As I stated, I only became a fan cos of one of my mates at school was always talking about them so they were the only English team I had a reason to take a bit of an interest in.
