14 October, 2011 at 6:52 pm #473462UK minister probed over data disclosure
Britain’s office of the Information Commissioner has announced that it would launch an investigation into data protection breaches committed by Cabinet Office Minister Oliver Letwin.
After the Daily Mirror revealed that British Prime Minister David Cameron’s chief policy adviser disposed of over 100 documents, including secret information on national security, concerns were raised about potential security risks sparking criticism among key politicians.
British Labour Party leader Ed Miliband accused Letwin of “treating important papers with contempt” and demonstrating “very strange behaviour.” Furthermore, Labour MP Michael Dugher called for an investigation into the classification of the discarded papers.
The Mirror published photographs featuring Letwin, Cameron’s right-hand man, discarding government papers into a waste paper bin and, on one occasion, handing them to a rubbish collector who, afterwards, throws them in his waste bag.
The photos released by the Mirror show that Letwin had not even shredded the papers throwing them in a way that the information could have been easily retrieved.
The newspaper reported that the papers included secret information on highly sensitive issues including correspondence on terrorism, national security, and constituents’ private details.
One of the discarded papers indicates that the committee responsible for monitoring the work of MI5 and MI6 “failed to get to the truth on UK involvement” in controversial terrorist interrogations known as extraordinary rendition, through which terror suspects were transported to places where they were subject to torture.
Moreover, the Mirror reported that the organizations involved in the papers included the European Commission, Ministry of Defence, Home Office, the National Health Service, Treasury, and the Metropolitan Police.
Papers discarded by Letwin, who has access to the highest levels of government, also involved politicians including Cameron, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, and British Chancellor George Osborne.

14 October, 2011 at 7:50 am #476580Federal law requires that organic food products be produced promoting ecological sustainability, without the toxic inputs and genetically engineered ingredients common in the conventional food system.
Increasingly, organic products are forced to compete with products that claim to be “natural.”
There are no restrictions for foods labeled “natural” (very basic standards exist only for meat products). The term often constitutes nothing more than meaningless marketing hype promoted by corporate interests seeking to cash in on the consumer desire for food produced in a genuinely sustainable manner.
Unlike the organic label, no government agency, certification group or other independent entity fully defines the term “natural” on processed food packages or ensures that the claim has merit.

:shock:13 October, 2011 at 10:35 am #480131Yes I agree, it’s been 18 years overdue. Watching his mother speak about the coming trial I think showed how much pain she still feels. Most can only imagine the trauma caused by a death of this kind. It’s early days yet but if found guilty, I hope they never sleep a wink till they draw their last breath.

12 October, 2011 at 10:01 pm #476579Amnesty urges Canada to arrest Bush II
Amnesty International has urged Canadian authorities to arrest and prosecute former US President George W Bush, for his authorization of torture practices in the US-led war on terror.
“Canada is required by its international obligations to arrest and prosecute former president Bush given his responsibility for crimes under international law including torture,” AFP quoted Amnesty’s Susan Lee as saying in a statement released on Wednesday.
Bush is expected to attend an economic summit in Surrey in Canada on October 20.
“As the US authorities have, so far, failed to bring former president Bush to justice, the international community must step in. A failure by Canada to take action during his visit would violate the UN Convention against Torture and demonstrate contempt for fundamental human rights,” Lee added.
Amnesty has accused Bush of authorizing the use of “enhanced interrogation techniques” and “waterboarding” on detainees held in secret by the Central Intelligence Agency between 2002 and 2009.
Amnesty’s memorandum cites several cases of alleged torture of individuals detained in Afghanistan and in Iraq at Guantanamo Bay by the US military.
