    I believe that they bypass the recycle bin and get lost onto the hard drive, and fragmented until they are overwritten by other files and thus irrevocably lost.

    I’m guessing you’re running into trouble with XP’s built in firewall. In the Firewall dialog, go to “exceptions” and add Symantec Antivirus to the list. See if that doesn’t fix the problem.

    Oh and since it is a part of Norton Anti Virus – you should permit it to access the internet.

    From memory, you need to have a restore point set in the system so that you can restore back to it. This can be created by you or Windows can automatically do it if you set it to do so.

    Also I believe that the restore will only take place if there have been ”changes” in your system that make a restore necessary. If Windows cannot detect any ”changes” then it won’t restore as there is no point.
