14 April, 2005 at 3:46 pm #106485Interesting. I use both Ad Aware SE and Adware Spy and for those little personal moments I follow up with SpyBot S&D and finally have a really good rub down with Window Washer. Strangely enough none of them have picked up this site as slipping you a little spy. Mind you I pick up so much spyware etc in a 24 hour period that one or two more ain’t an issue.
Incidentally I did pick up a tracking cookie from the DTI website and another from the Insolvency Service on Monday so maybe somebody is trying to tell me something huh?
My feeling is that in general you will collect an assortment of spies etc wherever you go these days and as long as you follow a regime of regularly cleaning them out, you should be OK. I usually set my stuff to run overnight every night so that the build up is really minimal.
14 April, 2005 at 10:24 am #106481Forgive me if I make one or two general comments.
The main point of having this thread is for those Board users who are gifted or skilled in the ways of computers and software etc to be able to help and assist those who may be less skilled or gifted and who have a problem.
We post on here to offer advice and guidance based on our own knowledge and experience. OK sometimes it isn’t always totally accurate, or maybe there is another way to resolve a user’s issue or find a work around etc.
But we do it because we are trying to use our knowledge to help others – not in the hope or expectation of reward but just because we want to help someone in trouble – and that is an honourable thing to do.
We are really fortunate to have as members, several people who have a lot of knowledge in their respective areas of expertise on computers. So wouldn’t it be good if we can all readjust our focus towards helping the other Board users with their issues and away from arguing amongst ourselves?
Finally, and on behalf of all the users that have been assisted so far, may I just thank all those of you who contribute so positively to this technical help board. I know that they really appreciate it and long may it continue.

Lmao PB, are you feeling Lucky?
Harrumph – I’ve never felt her in my life lol. Anyway if I did, and Mrs PB got to find out about it, …………….. OUCH!!! It doesn’t bear thinking about lol.
29 March, 2005 at 5:53 pm #106449Ok Telstar – I am around today and tomorrow but then am off on holiday on the 31st March until 9th April. so if I am not available i am sure that Anubis or Owen Kash can assist you.
29 March, 2005 at 4:00 pm #106447Ok Telstar – upgrading your RAM is probably the best option. It depends on your motherboard configuration as to how much you can insert. Most modern MB’s will have at least two slots for RAM some may have three or even four. If you have currently got 256MB of RAM installed – chances are that you have 2 X 128MB sticks. Ideally you can never have too much RAM so if you can add a further 256MB to give you 512MB in total then that is a good thing. (My little beast has 1GB of RAM and sometimes I fret a bit if the available RAM drops to around 300MB or so).
Please read your MotherBoard manual carefully (or visit their website ) as some MB’s will only function properly if the RAM sticks are matched (i.e. 2 x 256 or 4 x 128) and if you have unmatched combinations (i.e. 2X 128MB plus 1 x 256 MB) you can damage the MB quite effectively.
If you want any advice as to actually performing the upgrade then please let us know OK?
29 March, 2005 at 3:26 pm #106426Cheers for that Dave – I will let Anubis do the honours with Lucky (if there are any to be done that is) as he is far more technically proficient than I am. Anyway my wife may well want to delete my Operating System if I went ‘surfing’.
As for your ME issue. As ME does not require registration as such you could borrow a copy of Windows ME from a friend and instal it from that.
However there is a better option if you want. As you have a previous version of Windows already on your PC – you can buy an upgrade disc to upgrade it to Windows XP (Home or Pro) quite a bit cheaper than having to buy a full retail version. The upgrade version will look for a previous Windows Operating System and then, once found, it will completely re-format your hard disk and install a full version of XP (Home or Pro – whichever one you have bought).
Quite frankly this would be a really sensible interim step before buying a new PC, as Windows ME is generally sneered at and with good cause.
29 March, 2005 at 11:28 am #106445Hi Telstar – sure no problem please join in as well.
In your case you probably have 256 MB of RAM actually installed on your PC (even though it is showing less) as the memory sticks come in multiples of 64 (e.g. 64MB; 128MB; 256MB; 512MB). Your processor speed seem to be OK though.
Where I am going with this is to reccomend that 1) you insert another RAM stick into your PC to increase its memory or 2) to use a memory recovery utility to optimise the RAM usage.
I know that the usual fix is to prevent processes starting up with Windows (using ‘msconfig’) but I have always found that this is only a short term work around. Sooner or later you need to increase the physical RAM to cope with all the stuff that you are asking your PC to do.
29 March, 2005 at 11:07 am #106443Ellen, the immediate this to tell you is that if you are using Windows XP Home and have only 64 MB of RAM you simply do not have enough RAM for your computer to operate properly. Are you certain that you have only 64MB???
On your desktop RIGHT click ‘My Computer’ and on the pop up menu LEFT click ‘Properties’. You will then see the processor type and speed as well as the RAM.
Please post them back here.
