Bassingbourne55 replied to the topic Meeting people from the internet – a warning in the board Getting serious 15 years, 5 months ago
While there are obviously dangers to meeting up with people you get to know on the net, this is just another way of meeting people and the same dangers exist elsewhere, like if you meet someone in a pub or club or through the dating ads in the local paper.
Thats the point though, it can be very damaging to men. Men can be vulnerable too and some…

I’m glad they were saved – a sad story with a happy ending. Of course they are just 6 animals and loads of other rescue cats and dogs aren’t so lucky, unfortunately.
We have three rescue cats, all 6 years old now. In our case, I imagine that if we hadn’t had them, someone else would have done.
I wish the kittens and their new owners well. I…[Read more]

How do you put controls on faith, it isn’t possible and wheres the harm in the belief in an after life… prove it isn’t so, because if you’re wrong you’re in big trouble.
There’s nothing wrong in believing in an after-life, although there’s absolutely no evidence there is one. But there is a lot of harm if that belief in an after life adversely…[Read more]

Bible’s just as much b/s as the Koran.
As a hardline atheist I’d agree with that. Although there are Christian fundamentalists and people have used the bible to justify doing terrible things, in the modern world there is a much bigger problem with people using the koran to do justify doing bad things than is the case with the bible. But we have…[Read more]

What we need to do is to encourage more people to buy cigarettes but not smoke them. That way it helps the economy without harming the nation’s health!

Hasn’t someone tried to get Ickworth House in Suffolk back from the National Trust because he claims his uncle, who owned it, was an alcoholic and was habitually drunk during the period when he made his will leaving the place to the NT?
In the case of this woman, the strange circumstances of the will make me feel that she was right to contest the…[Read more]

I use the bus company analogy here.
If a bus driver working for a large group like First or Stagecoach knocks over and kills a pedestrian, should the chief executive of the company resign?
It depends on the circumstances – if it was generally known that the driver in question was unsafe and the management had been alerted but had done nothing,…[Read more]

Can anyone remember when we had a good government? I can’t and I’m 54.
We are still living with the adverse effects of some of the policies of the Thatcher government and even the Wilson government. For instance, in Thatcher’s case, the abandonment of manufacturing industry in favour of service industry and the bad behaviour of some of the…[Read more]

Pubs were closing down long before the smoking ban came in. And the recession has seen off a good many pubs too.
My guess is that a lot of pub trade has been lost to people drinking at home while watching TV, or increasingly spending time on the net. We’ve heard very little about the extent of the collapse in real-world social activity caused…[Read more]

I once saw, out of the corner of my eye, a shadowy black cat run across our landing. We did have a black cat at the time but he was definitely asleep downstairs with my wife when I saw this and it couldn’t have been another cat as doors and windows were shut. Some other people on our estate say they have seen ghostly black cats in their house.

Bassingbourne55 replied to the topic Are there any native Welsh-speaking areas in England? in the board Getting serious 15 years, 7 months ago
Perhaps the furthest east that a Welsh place name survives is Kings’ Lynn in Norfolk (llyn = lake in Welsh) Of course, the Iceni tribe of East Anglia, Boudicca’s people, were ancient Britons (or celts) who would have spoken the Brithonic language, from which Welsh came.

We’ve had a lot of Polish workers in our area. I haven’t heard of any problems with them. In general the only major issue has been with a minority of Polish HGV and bus drivers who have turned out to be less skilled or experienced than employers were led to believe.

Riding as a passenger round the full-length Le Mans circuit in the back of a 1927 Bentley 4.5 Litre that actually competed in the 24 Heures du Mans when it was new. The car touched 90 mph on the Mulsanne straight and the wire wheels creaked a bit in the chicanes.

I always thought devolution was good, but independence bad. But the SNP-led Scottish govenrment has brought shame on Scotland and embarrassment to Great Britain. I’ve been on JC for years and I’m not on anyone’s MSN or any other messaging and I’m not in a clique and I’ve never had any problems. A few battles, yes, but that’s to be expected here!!!!
