In a way, British Rail as it now exists is the perfect fruition of the Beeching plan! A nationalised railway company that only owns disused railways and properties and runs no trains!

I’m a leftist atheist and I see radical Islam as being very right-wing in most aspects.
My view on Sharia law is this: If individuals wish to live their own lives according to Sharia law, they should be allowed to do so as long as they don’t contravene the national laws and as long as they don’t try and force Sharia law on others. National laws…[Read more]

I’m against fox hunting as a sport or leisure pastime. But I accept that foxes and other wild animals might need to be culled. If this happens it should be done humanely by professionals, presumably by cage-trapping and then euthanasia. Hunting, shooting or poisoning would obviously be impractical in towns anyway.
It’s very sad about the twin…[Read more]

I think Lady Gaga is OK but she’s a bit of a one-trick pony – mixing conventional music with eccentric lyrics and costumes.

When I was young, the permissive society was about men growing their hair in a way that shocked their grandparents and middle-class girls behaving in a way that was calculated to shock Mummy and Daddy.
Now the permissive society is more about recreational violence, bullying, binge drinking etc.

While these attackers deserve to die and I wouldn’t weep any tears over them if they met a nasty end, I remain opposed to capital punishment because if it were re-introduced, sooner or later there would be a miscarriage of justice leading to an innocent person being executed.
Prison sentences for murderers and other violent criminals should be…[Read more]

Why don’t they have birthday cake made from green vegetables? They could even FORCE the children to eat it in the name of healthy eating
PS I don’t like green vegetables apart from peas. Sprouts are the worst, they’re like eating dog poo.

Bassingbourne55 replied to the topic Proportional Representation in the board Getting serious 14 years, 11 months ago
It looks like we could see a situation where the Lib Dems could get more votes than Labour but less than half as many seats. That is clearly undemocratic.
What I would favour is halving the number of constituencies but each one electing 2 MPs – the winning candidate and the one who came second. That would be much more representative.

“This sprout, cabbage and butter-bean stew is just perfect.”Also, a slogan put up by a local estate agent just as the property recession was getting going in 2008 “There’s never been a better time to buy.” The words ‘lying’, ‘through’ and ‘teeth’ come to mind!

Most conspiracy theories are pure fantasy. On the subject of 9/11 – yes, there was a conspiracy – by Al Qaeda.
I do have one conspiracy theory about a recent event, though. That’s the Toyota re-calls. Without pointing the finger too closely, all the safety concerns about Toyota cars appear to have surfaced in the USA within a short space of…[Read more]

As it turned out, it might have been worse – he was a very tall, powerful man in an expensive looking coat. Afterwards I gathered that he might well have been a serious criminal who was on bail – but that still doesn’t explain his motive. Surely it was risky for him in an area where the police had been at an incident only a few minutes earlier…[Read more]

I had a similar situation some years ago. I was stopped, while on foot, and manhandled by someone claiming to be a CID police officer. The man explained there had been a robbery in the area and I resembled the description of a suspect. Earlier there had indeed been an alarm going and police in the area, which made the man seem plausible. After…[Read more]

There are 4 types of music that I consider to be nearly all bad: Jazz, country, opera and rap.
I watched the video and for once I can say ‘I don’t call that music, it’s just noise’!!
However, despite the cacophonous disarray, it did appear they could probably play their instruments quite well if need be.

As an atheist I would dispute the fact that we have Christian laws, most of the laws here have been made on the basis of protecting people. There are a few archaic laws that go back to the days when the Church of England was a lot more powerful than it is now.
I do not think that Sikh daggers…[Read more]
