Bassingbourne55 replied to the topic 2013 unlucky? Why? in the board Off Topic Chat 12 years, 2 months ago
In fact there’s no number 13 on our road – our house should be 13 but it’s 15 instead. But that was how it was when me moved in – in fact I call the garden shed no.13 !

If I really needed to know the answer I’d go to the public library and come away again without finding the answer.

Bassingbourne55 replied to the topic Jimmy Saville in the board Chat forum three boards 12 years, 5 months ago
I always thought Jimmy Savile was creepy, like there was something about him that didn’t add up. He somehow managed to be both bland but intense at the same time, relying on a collection of catchphrases and cliches while being over familiar with people.
As a DJ he smarmed his way through whatever show he was presenting without appearing to show…[Read more]

Just thought I’d keep this alive with one of my occasional necroposts….
Reviving this old thread 6 years on……
People have voted with their feet… This is only the second post on this board in this month, and we’re 2/3 of the way through it.
This bears out what people say in the old thread – people aren’t really interested in chatting…[Read more]

What is interesting is that the ‘Arab Spring’ uprisings were not stopped, despite brutal force being used, and they happened one after another – Tunisia – Egypt – Libya – Syria.
This is a bit like the fall of the Iron Curtain regimes in the 1980’s.
One can’t help feeling there might have been a master plan guiding the uprisings and their…[Read more]

Winston Churchill proposed a ‘United States of Europe’ after the Second World War, and his proposal inspired the setting up of the Common Market, which became the EEC and is now the European Union. See: http://www.churchill-society-london.org.uk/astonish.html
I believe the EU is essentially a force for good and can in no way be compared to…[Read more]

This is the oldest post I could find on JC with zero replies. That’s all I’ve got to say about it except that now it no longer has zero replies.

If they bring in ‘vetting’, then it should work both ways. While women are less likely to be physical or sexual abusers than men, there have been several cases of ‘financial abuse’ by women, where men have been conned out of their savings.

People should have to use their real names, like they do with Facebook, on things like Twitter.
If I’d had to use my real name here on JC, I’d never have said half the things I have done, and I’ve always been fairly mild-mannered and not very controversial. -
Bassingbourne55 replied to the topic Welcome To Britain in the board Getting serious 13 years, 8 months ago
It’s pretty out-of-date stuff – Climate change is on the back burner now, since the steep rises in global average temperatures seen in the 1990’s haven’t continued over the last decade, despite the fact that we’ve been pumping more and more CO2 into the atmosphere.

I dreamt I was lying beside a railway line and there was a diesel locomotive parked with its engine running. I woke up and the cat was lying next to the pillow purring!
OK, that one’s a joke.
I think dreams are drawn from random things in our minds – things that have made us happy or cross or sad or things we worry about. I don’t think dreams…[Read more]

Wrong to medicate without consent, but not really that dangerous.
What about chlorination of water, then? Very small amounts of this deadly poison has been added to our water for decades and there’s no fuss because without it we’d probably still be at risk of typhoid and cholera. And yet people do make a fuss about flouride. Why the difference?

I’m not a monarchist but I have to say I admire the Queen for making the visit to Ireland and the whole tone of the visit was just right. It seems that she was generally well received and it was quite a brave thing to do.
Hard-line Irish republicans were angered by the visit, but I imagine that hard-line Ulster loyalists would have been too -…[Read more]

Bassingbourne55 replied to the topic Facebook changed again in the board Getting serious 13 years, 11 months ago
Facebook is so user-unfriendly and counter intuitive it’s a mystery why it became so popular.
I use it, I’ve belonged for a few years and uploaded photos etc, but it’s like it’s something from the mid 1990’s
Where is the customisation? Where’s the choice of coloured backgrounds? Where’s the choice of typefaces?

A few years ago the historic Great Western Railway steam locomotive ‘City of Truro’ was in for a major overhaul. Before it was dismantled the workshop crew carefully re-painted one side of the loco and tender in British Railways black, complete with the early British Railways transfer on the tender. They took photos of the loco and stored them…[Read more]

I haven’t missed the point, I was really talking about the misapprehension that Welsh people are Celts and English are not.
I’m not anti-Welsh – like I say I’m part Welsh myself and I can speak a bit of Welsh although I’ve forgotten more than I remember.
