26 April, 2007 at 11:58 am #268418Liberal Democrat councillor Khurshid Ahmed, has been arrested in Greater Manchester following allegations of electoral fraud. He was questioned on suspicion of forgery and providing false information to the electoral register officer. Greater Manchester Police said a 48-year-old man from Oldham was arrested on Tuesday and released on bail until July. Mr Ahmed represents the Werneth ward of Oldham.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/manchester/6590665.stmNew Labour County councillor Olive McIntosh-Stedman has been charged with council tax fraud. Ms McIntosh-Stedman was charged with two counts of making false council tax benefit claims in 2002. She has denied all the charges, but has quit the Labour group and is currently sitting as an independent.
Former Labour city councillor Susan Brown, the party’s south east regional spokesman, said: “The Labour Party can confirm the resignation from the Labour group of councillor Olive McIntosh-Stedman because she is facing charges in the courts.” The city council is still owed about £5m in unpaid council tax and has enlisted the help of a private firm to try and recover some of the debt.

Now …. come on dear … let’s have the dirt of some of the smaller fringe ones …. like the BNP for example.
27 April, 2007 at 11:47 am #268420Conservative Councillour Ron Liversedge was banned from driving for 20 months after he failed a police breath test. He was also given a £500 fine and ordered to pay costs of £69 by Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court. Mr Liversedge was stopped by police who said they could smell alcohol on his breath and he was unsteady on his feet. He failed a breath test on the spot and was taken to St Mary’s Wharf police station where the extent of his alcohol consumption was revealed by further tests. Cllr Liversedge pleaded guilty to the charge and submitted a letter in mitigation to the magistrates. He also told the magistrates that his earnings could be affected by a driving ban saying, “There is a possibility that I would lose my main employment and that would affect my earnings.” He was told that his ban would be reduced to 15 months if he successfully completed a drink-drivers’ rehabilitation course. (Source: Derby Evening Telegraph, Feb/06)
Councillor Ron Liversedge was issued with a £35 ticket for failing to park his car in a designated bay at the Council House while attending a training session. He reportedly swore at council warden John Orme saying, “Am I not important? I’m a councillor. I am at a meeting and I shall get this cancelled anyway.”
A standards committee meeting, which investigates breaches of the council’s code of conduct, heard that on the day several vehicles belonging to councillors were not parked in bays and so a message was sent to them to move their vehicles. One vehicle was moved, but Mr Liversedge’s car remained and so the council-employed parking attendant decided he had no option but to issue a ticket to Mr Liversedge’s vehicle.
Mr Orme said the councillor continued to follow him around the car park and, when he decided to ignore him and talk to a member of the public, Mr Liversedge swore at him. The hearing was told that the four-letter offensive word was heard by members of the public, including children. Mr Liversedge denied using the offensive name and saying “Am I not important?”, but said a heated exchange of words did take place, including some swearing.
Ms Gerry McLeod said Mr Liversedge continued his tirade to her and several people expressed their disapproval about his language, attitude and behaviour.
The standards committee found Mr Liversedge had breached the council’s Model Code of Conduct twice. He had failed to treat others with respect and did something that compromised the impartiality of those who work for the authority. He was censured, told he must have further training in the code of conduct and was suspended for one week or until he apologised to Ms McLeod.
http://www.derbygripe.co.uk/ronliv.htmLiberal Democrat Councillour Raymond Hutcheon, has resigned after his home was searched and he was questioned in relation to a major murder investigation. He lived with a prostitute and was spoken to by police for kerb crawling, was a member of a Holyrood adult entertainment working group, as well as holding key posts on Aberdeen City Council. He was also a member of Grampian Joint Police Board and Aberdeen City Council’s standards and scrutiny committee, which has a remit to ensure “absolute probity”.
Mr Hutcheon’s house was searched on Monday in connection with the investigation into the death of 57-year-old Ronald Mair, whose body was found bound and gagged in a cupboard of his home in Kettlehills Crescent, Aberdeen, last month. Mr Mair’s lifestyle was linked to drugs and prostitution. Mr Hutcheon, the LibDem councillor for Danestone, resigned on Monday night after more than 20 years as a councillor following the police search of his home.
In February 2002, Mr Hutcheon was spoken to by police after being spotted in the early hours of the morning in Ashgrove Road West in Aberdeen speaking to a woman. Nine months later, Mr Hutcheon was forced to resign his post as a governor of Oakbank School in Aberdeen after its board was told that he was in a live-in relationship with a former prostitute and recovering drug addict.
That controversy was revisited in 2005 when he was appointed to a Scottish Executive working party investigating sex shops, massage parlours and lap dancing clubs.
Aberdeen City Council yesterday confirmed Mr Hutcheon’s resignation but said in a statement that it was a personal matter.
Veteran LibDem councillor Ron Clark said: “It is sometimes not easy for someone on their own to cope.”

29 April, 2007 at 1:15 pm #268423New Labour Party Chair Dorothy Abbot has appeared in court accused of benefit fraud. She is alleged to have received more than £28,000 in incapacity benefit over a four-year period despite also working for Wigan Council. Abbot is charged with having “dishonestly failed promptly to notify Department of Work and Pensions of a change in circumstance that she knew would affect her entitlement to incapacity benefit namely that she was working”. The offence is alleged to have been committed between December 12, 2001 and November 7, 2005. She did not enter a plea when she appeared at Wigan Magistrates’ Court.

30 April, 2007 at 11:49 am #268425Conservative councillor Alan Birkitt who sold his girlfriend for sex to help pay the mortgage is to be sentenced after advertising his girlfriend on the internet. More than 20 men paid for her services at the couple’s home, while Birkitt sat in the room next door. Prosecutor Stuart Clarkson, opening the case at Wolverhampton Crown Court on Monday, said the woman had an IQ of 52 and had mild learning disabilities. He said men paid her £50 for intercourse and over several months she earned around £1,300. He also claimed he advertised himself on the same website, but did not attract much interest.
http://www.24dash.com/localgovernment/18137.htmNew Labour Councillour David Tomlin could be facing a jail sentence after dishonestly claiming £6,500 in benefits. The Redcar and Cleveland councillor pleaded guilty to three counts of false representation at Teesside Magistrates Court on Wednesday. It is understood he has resigned from the Labour party. Tomlin declined to comment on whether he would continue as a councillor.
The court was told the councillor filled in housing and council tax claim forms on three separate occasions over three years without declaring substantial capital assets.
Gerard Tompkinson, prosecuting, said Tomlin filled in a claim form for housing and council tax benefit in June 2003. But he failed to declare he had £11,800 in a Northern Rock account and £3,000 in an Abbey account.
http://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/news/topstories/display.var.1196206.0.councillor_may_face_jail_over_benefits_claim.phpLiberal Democrat Councillour Mushtaq Hayat is facing arrest for the second time this year after failing to turn up at Maidenhead magistrates court on Wednesday. Cllr Hayat is also facing charges of allowing his pizza restaurant to be infested with cockroaches for the second time. He failed to appear before magistrates on Wednesday, when a warrant for his arrest was issued. In December last year, his restaurant Halal Pizza Place, in Bradley Road, Slough, was closed down temporarily after it was found to be infested. The former chairman of the borough health panel also failed to turn up for a court appearance last month and a warrant was issued for his arrest at the time. Hayat already has one conviction over a cockroach infestation and was given a rap over the knuckles by health and safety bosses. He was fined £3,000 plus £1,500 hygiene costs in March 2003. Inspectors found evidence of an infestation by German cockroaches at the Halal Pizza Palace when they visited in January 2002.
When the Express visited Mr Hayat’s home in Wexham Road, he said: “I did not go to court because I had another appointment which was equally important. I was not aware that I could be facing arrest. I shall be getting in contact with police.”
But when the Express spoke to the borough council on Thursday morning, a spokesman said: “We have not heard that Cllr Hayat has turned himself in to the police. The warrant is still out for his arrest.”

All Emma is very ably doing is showing soem councillors from the tens of thousands of mainstream party politics are just as corrupt as those from the fringes of party politicd which you can count almost on one hand
More interesting would be a percentage of BNP councillors convicted of criminal activity (compared to the overall total of BNP councillors) and compare that to the main parties.
