Around 4,400 people end their own lives in England each year – that’s one death every two hours – and at least 10 times that number attempt suicide
People with a diagnosed mental health condition are at particular risk. Around 90% of suicide victims suffer from a psychiatric disorder at the time of their death.
The attitudes we hold toward people who attempt to take their lives can influence the course of their condition. The isolation that suicidal people feel can be reinforced by a judgmental approach in which their behaviour is viewed as manipulative or selfish. By stepping beyond our personal assumptions, and showing care and respect for the people behind the behaviours, we can help them talk about their feelings and help prevent suicide taking place.

9 September, 2013 at 6:15 am #520206Good post Lucy, mental health issues carry such a stigma still in todays society, someone who is clinically depressed often get told to ‘get a grip’ or pull yourself together’ or the old adage theres always someone worse off than you.
depression builds up, it isnt always apparent and because we cant actually see depression as we can see a broken leg or other ailments its often brushed under the carpet.
9 September, 2013 at 9:58 am #520207thank you trusty & cath…….Mental health is still very much a taboo with lots of people but anyone can be affected by mental health issues at anytime, its ok for people to say pull yourself together or get a grip, they wudndt say to someone with epilepsy get a grip and stop having fits, its an invisible illness and can be described as living in hell on earth, never judge anyone who is suffering from a mental illness because we can never say we wont be the next, its time to change the stigma!

10 September, 2013 at 6:10 pm #520209Well said Lancy. =D>
Mental health issues can and do affect huge numbers of people, who often do not realise they can be helped with medication, which can make a massive difference to their lives. Too many people dismiss depression as “just feeling fed up”. It needs to be accepted as an illness as debilitating as a physical illness and the taboo surrounding mental health issues needs to be changed11 September, 2013 at 6:37 pm #520210http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/chooselife
