Families in the developing world could pay the equivalent of hundreds of pounds for a basic basket of food that would cost £7 in the UK, according the Save the Children research.

In South Sudan, the basket of food would cost four times the weekly average wage.

The basket includes just one egg, five vegetables, five pieces of fruit, 1kg of meat, 500ml of oil, a pint of milk and a loaf of bread.

Climate change and population growth are causing food prices to spike, meaning even the basics are beyond the means of most poor families.

Justin Forsyth, Save the Children’s Chief Executive, said: ‘When prices rise, families cut back even further – unable to pay the price of nutritious foods which will help children grow up healthy and fulfil their potential.

The slow progress globally on malnutrition – still the underlying cause of a third of child deaths – could be at risk if we don’t act to help the poorest
    families. ‘

Malnutrition is a word that makes me feel ashamed to be a member of this so called civilised society. No child on this Planet needs to go to sleep with an empty belly at night. We over indulge ourselves to the point of bursting with unhealthy garbage, then throw a few quid in a tin and God gives you the big thumbs up and a high 5.Western Governments compare aid packages in the locker rooms of power, millionaire performers promote their latest offerings with the usual platitudes, corrupt 3rd World Juntas rub their hands with glee at the thought of money for old rope. And still……Children are starving to death in the year 2012 on Planet Earth. This is our problem. It must be taken out of the hands of pen pushers and number crunchers.

    Agree.

If human preservation was a priority, they(we?) wouldn’t be allowing more GMO type foods into our mainstream markets, new wars would not have begun where thousands of children and adults lives were taken. Instead of standing by and watching certain parts of the world die off, in the most torturous of ways (starvation, murderous wars and disease), we would balance the scales of wealth that most of us take for granted.
Unfortunately, there is only so much a handful of people can do in the spectrum of what it really is. Commoners don’t have enough power or money to overcome this, it definitely needs a universal union and agreement in order to make a notable difference.

Charity really does start within and if we know anything about politicians and high power people in general; they are anything but charitable. $Ching $ching!

There is a huge difference between reducing the birth rate through family planning and this.

Once I watched a documentary called the ” dying rooms”.. about little girls in china, wrapped up till they over heated . dehyrdrated and died in their cots..the wee boys who were autistic and sent to homes due to ” imperfections”. were sent in to see if the babies were dead yet.. If the babies were not dead the little boys were encouraged to ” help” them by strangulation and smothering. and were awarded for every dead baby..

Mass Genocide .. and this is happening NOW !
