    shocked

right then, the strip of bone or plastic (given the age of the guitar it’s probably bone) is known as the ‘nut’ and just needs replacing with a new one. this is a very straightforward job and any repair centre should be able to do this for you. I would gladly do it for you but I think the cost of getting the guitar to me would be more expensive than the repair itself

as for the crack on the body, if it had been done recently I’d have said get it looked at asap, but given the time that has passed I don’t think it would matter if you waited a few more years

if you can upload a pic it would help me see if I think it’s worth doing anything with or not

    startled

can’t be as bad as the probs I’m having with the who am I thread!

tbh, the crack isn’t really anything to worry about. i know it doesn’t look very good but it is in such a place where it won’t have any ill effect on the guitar. if it was going to cause anything bad to happen it would have done it by now.

as far as the nut goes I was right about one thing, it could do with replacing but it’s plastic and not bone. now, I have had an idea but it involves a little bit of effort on your part and depends on how brave you are  If you or someone else can get the existing nut off the guitar, you could send it to me and I would find one that’s an exact match size wise. it would probably be white though as black ones aren’t all that common now. all you’d have to do then is pop the new one on and bob’s your uncle, and it wouldn’t cost you anything either.
