How many processes should be running in windows ???

I only ask because at the moment I have a lot running. My PC has 512MB Ram but FreeRam XP Pro says I only have 216 MB free. When I look at my processes I have the normal explorer, ieexplorer and 3 svhosts running, along with AVG. These things I am okay with [although I have 3 svhosts running].

Obviously I don’t want to stop any processes that I have no idea what they do………..

I have 39 on average running on mine Morty but it all depends on what progs are installed on your comp. This is a link where you can put in the processes that are running and you can check out what they pertain to.

Show us your wrist strengthening technique DirtyBerty

Thanks BB I’ll have a look.

I have 44 processes running, my pc just seems to use a lot of RAM. When I then use Photoshop [which uses stacks of RAM], then everything starts running in slow motion………….

I know, I’m a woman, I want it all [and I want to be able to juggle those balls of yours in the air………]

I might disable some of them, like I said, Photoshop uses a lot and it gets painfully slow……………not that there’s anything wrong with pain……..

Well considering XP’s a 32 bit OS it takes 256 mb of RAM to run it properly thats were a majority of RAM goes as for trying to free up RAM and CPU your going to need to edit your start up registry keys. Try starting with uneeded progs i.e msn running in the background, but id need to see your Process list and run registry keys to advise you. Do you use alot of background scanners? Also if you disable memory paging this can help speed things up but not always (more often than not it does). Do you have an Intel chipset? Try enabling UDMA66 transfer this can speed things up to.

You lost me at XP sweetie………….lol………..no okay, I understand really !

Well I have disabled a couple of things, like my Nokia suite and O2 programme I downloaded for my mobile. I have McAfee, AVG, 12Ghosts pop up blocker running.

Last week Photoshop froze up and the programme closed. Windows reset itself minus a couple of background processes and it worked okay and I had a lot more ram free.

It’s just that normally I have a couple of applications running [as I use this laptop for work sometimes as well].

    How do I enable UDMA66 transfer ???

I think, from reading these posts that I haven’t got anything “abnormal” running [me ?? normal ?? never !] but I would like to disable some processes if I can.
