Have any of you upgraded to Windows 7 yet? I’ve had an upgrade for a few months now but have been put off installing it from what I have read about certain problems. I currently use Vista which despite many folks telling me they don’t like, I seem to have no problems with it. So, basically, should I upgrade to Windows 7 or wait a few months longer until they sort out some of the issues that seem to be occuring ? :?
26 February, 2010 at 10:26 am #434578Poet, the ‘word on the street’ is that Vista is a total complete and utter dog, launched in haste and regretted at leisure.
Windows 7 is by comparison vastly better. it has a few annoying little habits which take some getting used to, in that it treats its users as complete morons unable to know whether they should instal or delete a file etc. Maybe, on reflection, this is the right approach.
If you can get past the somewhat girly desktop, with the easy access toolbar at the top of the screen and the wishy washy ‘soothing’ pastel colour schemes, it appears on the face of it to be more stable and usable that Vista – but then anything would be more stable & usable that Vista.
I set up a computer the other day using Windows 7 Home Premium and my real annoyance was that the navigation to basic stuff (like Control Panel etc) was ‘intuitive’ (i.e. bloody hard to find what you were looking for). Also Outlook Express is no longer an integral (free) part of the Operating System, so you need to install a stand alone e-mail client or use Outlook – part of the Office suite.
I shall be sticking with Windows XP until the 22nd Century.
10 March, 2010 at 9:42 pm #434579Thanks for ‘The word on the street’ info PB that’s more or less what I’ve heard too. I have XP on my Desktop PC but sadly my laptop came with Vista installed so it seems my best option is to update that to Windows 7. Vista at first seemed ok but it takes so much longer to boot up and uses a hell of a lot of memory. As for sticking with XP, I still wish I had Windows 98 8)
Bring back steam trains and national service……..and British Leyland 8)
Sorry for the delayed reply, life got a bit in the way
11 March, 2010 at 5:11 pm #434580BTW: I’ve just come across a slight ‘glitch’ with Windows 7.
If you have a laptop and use ‘fingerprint authentication’ to sign in (in addition to a password) this system apparently won’t work on Windows 7.
It works with Windows Vista (all editions) and naturally works with Windows XP (Home & Pro)…. but Mr Microsoft doesn’t appear to have included it into Windows 7 – along with several other tried & trusted bits & pieces.
21 April, 2010 at 8:06 pm #434581As yet I’m still using Vista which seems to find new ways of getting right up my nose each time I use it !!!! However, a certain person I know is upgrading from Vista to 7 so I’ll be able to check it out before I decide what to do. Is it possible to install XP over Vista?
On a totally different subject, is it possible to charge a laptop up from the ciggy lighter socket in a car?

27 March, 2011 at 6:16 pm #434584Some hardcore Windows users actually prefer Vista over Windows 7 because they consider Windows 7 to be a rather cheap stop-gap of an operating system that Microsoft put out in a hurry after the PR disaster of Vista.
Windows 7 is okay and I like it but if Vista works for you then why change?

OK, I’ll admit it I’m an old die-hard windows 98 user but had to stop using it.
I have Vista now, with a VMware virtual machine running XP (for older programmes) and Ubuntu. Vista is very quick on my machine, much quicker than XP, but not nearly as quick as Ubuntu (which I would like to use more but am only just learning to programme it).
Vista is much better now with the new service packs, whereas Windows 7 bugs the [inset own insult here] off me because it treats you like an idiot. It does so many irritating things without asking first. Tried to connect a laptop to my home network and took ages to switch off all the “helpful” additions like automatic file and media sharing. It all had to be done several times to get the right set up.
At least in Vista you can see what you are doing and it generally does what is says on the tin. With the new service packs I don’t find it glitchy at all – but in truth I’d rather be using Ubuntu and Open Office.
Edited for typos – hope I got them all this time! :(
29 March, 2011 at 11:04 am #434586We have lots of new computers at work on windows 7. When our techy left for pastures new all the new ones had XP put on them so we have those and some on vista…………..I guess it shows that new isn’t always the best in some peoples’ eyes.
