For the last few years, we have run an apprenticeship program. But now I am thinking twice about.
I know that all the stundents in here moan on about having to pay £1000 for a full time course.
Here the just the college fee’s for a 16 year old on this first year.
Tuition £375
Awarding body reg. £126
Indivual tutorials in college and a minimum of 6 site visits at £150 each £600Making a Total of £1101
For an 8 hour one day/ per week /32 week course.
Price taken rom Central sussex college.
This is just college fee and not wages. Which are £3.50 per hour. 35 hours worked. The site visites are a pain in the ass. You have to try and find something easy for the kid to do.
They don’t do “test” at the college anymore, they all have to be done on site or in someones home.
Thier is a lot of work we do, but no lead roofing and guttering. I don’t know any plumbers who do now.
So has I ring thru the yellow pages tring to find a guttering company who will take them for a few days and get them thru there guttering assessments, I am being to think ” is this worth the trouble”
Up to 2003 all test where done at college, but the had to chagen it, it work too well.
Has I look at this year 16 years asking for apprenticeships, I am having second throughts.

11 May, 2006 at 12:18 am #214483You should be receiving financial assistance from The Learning and Skills Council towards the cost of an apprentice’s training.

11 May, 2006 at 10:44 am #214485Well if only DOA could get ‘stundents’ to ‘chagen’ properly, everything would be alright.
Our gutters would run as they should and we could all sleep safely in our beds without gettin wet in uncomfortable places.

We do get some money from them, but it only covers a small part of the training cost, and you have to fill out 20 forms to get it.
The money has to be spent on what they say and not on wot we need.
We have try using “training provers” a few years ago, but we lose control of our trainees and disapline.
We has to stop using them when they send us a guy of 23 who had only 2 finglers missing on both hands and counld’t speck English. Then sceam like hell, when we turn him down, we told then to f u ck off.
There more trouble than there worth.
