It tells me that at the time of your posting, 58% of the votes were in favour of England winning The World Cup 2006.
And your point is?

19 June, 2006 at 6:27 pm #226508Well.. at the outset (and well before actually) I tipped Italy. Although they have hardly set the tournament alight I shall stick with The Azzurri..
Argentina look tremendous.. and have certainly peaked.. I would so love to see them win it!!
But I find tis rare that a team peaking so early actually goes on to win the tournament (they are usually shell shocked or controversially hard done by and crash out bravely in the quarters or semis  ).
In my opinion momentum is gained throughout the tournament.. and a team never stumbles over the winning line as such.. both Italia 90 and USA 94 could provide stern argument against this, but methinks stifling, cynical opposition tried very much to ruin the day in those cases.Applying such a theory.. one would consider England in with a chance.
But.. erm.. at the risk of being flayed here 8-[ … they have been pretty awful.. and it saddens meSven-Goran Eriksson is a disgrace. He has had two years since the last major tournament to shape a team – to select players who.. well.. at the risk of sounding obvious.. play well together. But in all honesty Do they? Do they really?
In my opinion Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard are at their best when responding to and reacting with the midfield play of Claude Makelele or Xabi Alonso. If Eriksson had any balls and thought about actually Creating a Team he would have made the decision to put Michael Carrick ahead of one in a rotating system perhaps. I wager Alf Ramsey would have.. not a man for populous bloat was Alf.
Unlike the World Cup Winning General, Eriksson has spent no time in the past four years testing the limits of his players. England have swanned on to the world stage in the last week or so immersed in a culture of their own unthinking fame. Alas winning this requires thought.
Eriksson’s selfish, mercenary cynicism is plain to see with the Wayne Rooney circus. His return to fitness is a huge boost, and England’s only (though slim) chance of making any waves in Germany.. but by placing such responsibility on this young lad I believe Eriksson is hiding his own incompetence.
The unfortunately named Jose Pekerman of Argentina can be no more marked in contrast. He left egos such as Veron, Zanetti, and Samuel at home. Aimar, Tevez, and Messi have been brought off the bench to quite spectacular effect. Look at Spain.. Hard brave decisions being made with Raul, Joaquin, Iniesta, Fabergas ALL starting on the bench. Decisions!… Shaping!
Only last week, as demands for the inclusion of Messi reached fever pitch… Pekerman simply retorted… “We are not going to have our progress determined by public opinion or the press. If it went badly, the only one to pay the price would be the boy. Because Messi is only a boy.“
In stark contrast methinks to the rabid Eriksson.England must come to terms with the fact that the assessment of their abilities in Heat Magazine and the likes is not shared (or feared) by the rest of the world.. with the exception of young Rooney.. and that is because this lad is driven not by headlines or agents.. but by genius.
Let’s hope this gathers momentum for all.. and a TEAM takes shape to nurture and not exploit it.. if not the enlarged egos of the “manager” and a fair few of his players will go the way all exclusive self regard goes in TEAM sports…
And a pretty talented generation will be wasted.
