I would hazzard a guess at either Maradona (cheater!) or Pele.

Zidane is without question the greatest player in the world at the moment with Figo possibly a close second. Zidane out played Figo in the semis of Euro 2000 this is proof that he is the better player.

When i used to play fanatsy football, Cantona was my star, at that time he was the best in the world. Well it chops and changes, but of all time, its a different story. As much as i’d like Cantona to be the worlds greatest player, it will never be. Doesn’t respect come into it? I mean it’s football – not kung foo fighting! Even though Zidane has had some red cards this season, he’s one of very few big name players that admitted that he was being very stupid.

ronodiniho is the best player in the world at the moment in my opinion

zidine is getting on a bit now, thought he has always looked old anyway, still got the skill though, watched him play recently for real madrid and he was the best player on the pitch by a long way

still i seen ronodinho play and the things he can do, are out of this world

Ya, Zidane and Figo are still good players, but they are getting on just a bit. Ronandinho is defo the best player in the world.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder

Only ever saw George Best once live and it was when he was a journeyman (Hereford I think it was?)- way past his best but had some quality touches. However have seen many clips on TV which give the impression of greatness.

Don’t think I have a “greatest ever player” cos several have been that class above the rest (usual names, Pele, Edwards, Beckenbauer,Platini,Zidane,Muller,Cryuff,Maradona,Moore, etc etc etc).

However Frank Lampard has the potential to be the finest English player in a generation and the fact that Chelski’s spine is Cole,Terry and Lampard fills me with glee before next years world cup.

That is a hard question. There were/are so many really great footballers past/present that it would be impossible to pick just one individual.
There have/are some fantastic strikers, fantastic midfielders, fantastic wingers, fantastic defenders, fantastic goalies etc.
To pick just one, well, I would not be able to do it, I`d end up picking a heck of a lot :D

Is that impression good enough to qualify you to judge his quality?

Oh come on dropped-anchor, pick one? Pick the player YOU¬VE seen perform the best?

The trouble with TV clips is they are a “greatest hits” of performances- his quality was undeniable but I only saw him play once and he wasn’t then the best (!) player then.

To prove my point, the Trevor Sincalir overhead kick from 20 yards (in his QPR days) will always be in my top 3 goals of all time for athleticism, timing, and sheer all round brilliance but I wouldnt put Trevor Sinclair as an all time great player. George Best scored some truly wonderful goals in his time but he played over 200 times for Man Utd.

Great player without a doubt but I’m with Dropped on this one- I can’t genuninely pick one player as better than a dozen or so others over the last 50 years

 Pele, Platini, Cruyff, Maradona, Charlton, Matthews, Lampard, Best, Zico, Socrates, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Beckenbauer, Muller, Matthaus, Klinsmann, Gascoigne, Rooney, Signori, Zola, Zidane, Henry….

And what set of domestic club supporters still sing their name after more than five years since they last played?

    The tune was catchy :?
