Different ppl will have different views so who do you think is in the “wrong”
28 February, 2012 at 3:01 pm #489924The lady was going through security not through passport control so I dont see that wearing a veil in that part of the airport should be an issue. If its her religious belief to wear a veil I dont see why it should be an issue for other people.
Having said that I dont see what the guy said as being offensive, he was merely making an observation. I think expecting him to retract what he said or apologise is unreasonable.
28 February, 2012 at 3:17 pm #489925As Mrs T says, she was going through security not passport control so there was no requirement to show her face. Had the lady in question set off the alarms she’d have been taken to a private area and searched. Had a sikh wearing a turban gone through and set off the alarms the same would have happened to him. Just the same as anyone else who set of the alarm regardless of religious persuasion or attire. Whatever you think of it, their clothes are for religious reasons, his scarf isn’t.
It’s common knowledge that jokes and smartass comments as you go through passport control and security in any country don’t go down well. It’s unfortunate that he made his “joke” in front of a muslim (female) security guard who found it offensive…incidentally, the article I read about it yesterday (can’t locate it now) he said a lot more and the words he used were far more offensive than reported here, I suspect he toned it down a bit for the BBC. Regardless, the best course of action going through security is to keep it polite and courteous with no jokes.
It does seem to me that he’s making a mountain out of a molehill though…there isn’t a new Fireman Sam series or range of merchandise coming out soon is there?
28 February, 2012 at 6:33 pm #489926Interesting. I must admit I wasnt thinking of the Muslim woman.
I was thinking more of the author or the airport security person being in the wrong both for the same reason – being petty.
28 February, 2012 at 8:12 pm #489927If people can be asked to remove their crash helmets in the banks then surely everyone should have to have their face visible in airports bearing in mind there are serious terroist issues all over the world.
28 February, 2012 at 8:49 pm #489928Sometimes political correctness is very bizarre. Religious differences often appear to be behind a lot of these problems but if people choose to live in a different country should they not respect the historical views of the country they move to rather than trying to impose the views from where they originated – just a thought
It would appear that things in this story have been blown out of proportion but like most stories there are three views, one side, the other side and the truth

Of course Christians have done that throughout history….
28 February, 2012 at 10:27 pm #489930exactly – you only have to look at the number of missionaries to various countries and often a lot of commonwealth countries in the past
28 February, 2012 at 10:34 pm #489931Ummm…the missionaries did not respect the historical views of the countries they moved to, they imposed their views, as have Christians throughout the ages.
And let’s not talk about how a lot of ex-pats behave when they move abroad…
28 February, 2012 at 10:38 pm #489932lol we avoid the ex-pat cliques like the plague but know what you mean
