I like a discussion, and a discussion involves argument.

We all have differences, and sometimes these differences need to be argued out.

but whether it’s men or women, you can’t totally separate discussion from ego, and tempers can fray in any of us. I’ve seen that with everybody who posts here.

There is a strong tendency to gopping on somebody right from the start in order to wreck a a genuine argument, though.

There’s a difference between arguing and gopping.

There’s also a big difference between arguing and debating…… or discussing for that matter.

In my opinion…..arguing is for fanatics……reasonable people discuss, debate, and generally reason things through……..arguing is for unreasonable people who have no power to see both sides of a situation….

There is that difference, but arguing and debating can mean the same things.

There is the reasoned debate of the polite salons, but often such discussion can be soporific.

But there is also polemical debate, where the cut and thrust of argument is sharp and the issues clarified. Movement forward can often take place as a result o this sharpness.

Unfortunately, gopping can also arise from this polemic debate. That’s when people feel their ego is under assault, that they won’t look good as a result of the polemic, or that they’re not being treated reasonably. Always the downside of polemic, but given that I enjoy polemic debate.

Then there’s gopping instead of argument. One person lays one side of an argument down, and the other puts his hand in his mouth and gops on the other person. This can be accompanied by the gopper putting his/her own argument, and not wanting anyone to listen to anything opposed. But sometimes, it’s just gopping in a manner so disgusting that nobody wants to read the debate further.

Gopping has been known in jc debates.

what’s gopping ? I thought it was slang for ugly or disgusting ?

    #1097567

Gopping is what it sounds like.

In this context, it’s putting your hand in your mouth and

    gop

    out comes vomit/phlegm/anything ugly/disgusting.

It’s an effective way of flaming people and destroying argument.

    In this context.

I could quote from a recent discussion, but it may lead to more gopping.

Hmmm   must be a regional thing  I think in these parts we’d say gobbing …. like footy players do…

Mr scep, I do hope you aren’t inferring I gop / gob lol so unladylike tsk….

    No, Ms Mooosey.

You are not the person I had in mind.

I’m keeping it impersonal, as mentioning a name would merely set loose another torrent of personal abuse.

I thought gobbing meant something else.

Doesn’t matter. The whole point of slang is to make a word that sounds what it describes.

Gopping sounds what it describes, and is wider than gobbing, which merely refers to phlegm.

But it doesn’t matter. Slang definitions are loose.

I certainly don’t see anything wrong with a sharp argument.

You can give as good as you get, ms M, but like QE/rudeboy (who has a very coarse sense of humour) you do put forward arguments which stand or fall as arguments.

Except when you talk about religion :rose:
