9 June, 2012 at 10:43 am #498615Posh is subjective; it is whatever you personally deem to be better than you that you aspire to, therefore (assuming that you grow as a person) it is a moving target.
Several years ago my sister and her family came to stay. We were both the first in our family to own our own homes, she lived in a terraced house, I lived in a detached. My niece asked “Mam why isn’t aunty Jen’s house joined to next door?” Answer “Because she’s posh.” Later on, “Mam, why have aunty Jen and uncle **** got 2 cars?” The answer could have been because we both need them for work but my sister answered “Because they’re posh”. Now they have a detached house, 3 cars in the family and I’m no longer posh!
I always think of my ex-husband’s family as posh. They had all the right cutlery (and knew how to use it!), all the right glasses, knew just what wines went with what food and so on. Vegetables were put into dishes and you helped yourself at the table, bread was in a bread basket and so on. I soaked it up like a sponge. It wasn’t having the right things that made them posh to me though, it was the fact that it was artless, this was part of everyday life even when they were eating alone and not just for show when they had guests.
9 June, 2012 at 11:49 am #498616My idea of posh is … Afternoon tea at the Ritz.
All those cute cakes, scones, pastries and tiny sandwiches … Some even have lemon butter!
The shiny silver, the china, the lovely setting, wonderful…..
A nice walk around Green Park afterwards ….
Well I can dream …..
” to the manner born …” as the saying goes ….

9 June, 2012 at 5:41 pm #498620being a member of the Bullingdon Club is posh…
I once saw a prominent member, who goes under the initials of BJ, push his head out of a college windown and in a fruity voice tell someone that they were a little p i ss pot. I’d never see anyone look more like a Toby Jug outside a cheap Bowness gift shop.
He was the proof, along with the other members, that being posh is not the same as being “refained”, or even having basic manners.
They are all celebrated in a new West Ebd play called – Posh!
9 June, 2012 at 11:23 pm #498621Thanks to all who contributed :) I needed some ideas for a web-based questionnaire I was asked to cobble together – and this has helped a lot.
Thanks again

DanAlley cat, next time you want work done for you, could you say at the start rather than at the end? That way we know what we’re doing. T’ank oo

You can be assured I have just as much work to do now as I had before I asked – my intention was not to lighten my workload. I was asked to do a job, the subject matter of which piqued my curiosity, hence my post.
If it concerns you (and whilst we’re suggesting what people ought/ought not to do) perhaps you could make knowing a posters motivation a prerequesite of your answering any questions.
