A young woman is 20p short of her bus fare for the last bus home, the bus driver refuses to let her on the bus, none of the passengers offer to make up the shortfall and whilst walking home she’s raped. The bus driver has been disciplined.

So imagine, 3am, the last bus home, you’re already on the bus and you see a young woman scrabbling in her purse and bag for 8 minutes but she’s 20p short of her bus fare. Would you offer to pay the 20p or would you turn a blind eye? What would you do?

I’d pay her fare for her. It’s common decency. I’ve done it before with a train fare. The bus driver is just a jobsworth. The rest of the passengers, well I hope they never ever find themselves in need.

I wouldn’t have hesitated to pay the poor girls fare for her. I don’t know how those other passengers sleep at night. Nasty people, all for the sake of 20 measly pence!! And as for the driver, he should hang his head in shame.

Jen I listened to the debate on radio 2 on friday and it was fascinating ……hearing the different opinions from many of the listerners …………this really is an horrific case and one I hope never happens again………..over dinner we discussed what I’d heard and my daughter turned to me and said she had been refused entry to the last bus of the night quite a long time ago………..and all because she was 10p short!………..I felt sick to my core ……….fgs 10p 20p is nothing when it comes to the safety of someone late at night……we all need to learn from this ……..it makes me wonder how often people are refused a safe journey home all for the sake of a few pence.
