21 August, 2008 at 11:26 pm #346180Yeah it is but I think she is a druggy, everytime I get the syringe out to give her the medicine she is pawing at it  God knows what’s in the medicine…she was on ketamine but this stuff is called Metacam
After searching this on the net I have just found this!!!
Do you think my vet is on a cheapo and this would harm my Izzy!!?

I would not wish to cause panic but my dog was violently ill wilst on metacam, it made her a lot more poorly than she was, but I was assured it was a really good drug.
I wasnt convinced and asked my friend on another forum who is a vet nurse (has been for 15 years so knows a fair bit) and she said it doesnt agree with ALL animals, so I immediately telephoned the vets and they sorted out an alternative.
It seems to me that they dish it out the same way ours dish out penecilin (or they used to ).
Until you are sure I wouldnt give her anymore and have a chat about your concerns with your OWN vet first thing.
21 August, 2008 at 11:36 pm #346182Well she seems fine, like I said, she is loving it, can’t get enough, she is on a real small dose. She looks so spritely compared to what she was. Sure with what I have just been reading she would of been getting side affects already, what do you reckon?
21 August, 2008 at 11:37 pm #346183seems it harmful in cats if you overdose and i’d probably say in an arthritic cat who was getting long term doses maybe i wouldnt have thought your cat would suffer Sian as it’ll be just to reduce the swelling
Are there any side effects?
Metacam is a very safe drug as long it is used with care, but Metacam is a powerful drug and several side effects are known to occur on occasions. These are:Damage to the gut lining, possibly leading to ulceration, even perforation.
Kidney damage
Reduced blood clotting
Very rarely serious liver damage
The first signs of side effects are usually loss of appetite, vomiting or diarrhoea (possibly with blood). If these are seen it is important to stop the medication immediately and for a vet to check the animal. Usually everything will settle down quite quickly, with or without specific treatment, but occasionally these signs can progress to serious illness and even death, so they must not be ignored. Metacam can be regarded as a safe and effective treatment which brings enormous relief and dramatically improves quality of life in suitable patients, but it must be used carefully and under veterinary supervision.21 August, 2008 at 11:44 pm #346184I think she’s gonna be fine bar the fact she is now a full blown addict
21 August, 2008 at 11:45 pm #346185She’ll be ok.. sure somewhere i saw it said it tastes nice
