If you get accused of a crime like this and you’re completely innocent, there’s a good chance you will go to prison anyway if the case goes to trial. A jury will not give you the benefit of the doubt because the public has the mindset that there’s no smoke without fire. So it will always be a case of guilty until proven innocent with these accusations. Blame the tabloids for making the public like this. Remember when Matthew Kelly was accused of that sort of thing? The scummy News of The World tried to drag his name and reputation through the mud, doing everything to make people think that he was guilty, even though he was completely innocent.
Ever served on a jury Mr B? You’d be suprised how many people get away with murder (literally)- for ever dreadful case portrayed here, there are 10 gulity paedophiles who have good defence lawyers who ensure these people remain free to commit further crimes
20 June, 2006 at 12:18 pm #226310It’s a lot easier for innocent people to go to prison for crimes they didn’t commit than people imagine. I know of cases where people have gone to prison on the flimsiest of evidence. If you’re on legal aid and you can’t provide a checkable alibi then you’re screwed. If you’re on legal aid, can’t provide an alibi and face charges of a sexual nature then you might as well forget about the trial and go straight to prison. The system really is that bad. The jury should always give the defendant the benefit of the doubt but it doesn’t always happen. The public have adopted the mindset of guilty until proven innocent.

…and quite right too !!! Let’s face it a person has to be somehow or other connected with the crime in the first place; suspected of some sort of involvement in its commission; arrested by police; questioned at length; eventually charged; a file has to go to the CPS; they refuse to actually prosecute unless there is a ”reasonable prospect of conviction”.
Of course they’re guilty and it’s only because of bleeding heart apologists for criminals that they get off.

my friend was with legal aid. they were pretty crap and he would have been better off going and representing him self in court
ther was no evidence to suggest that my friend had done anything to the girls in question.
this story has been all over the irish news papers for the last few days and the public and members of the community…(these are people that would have known my friend very well)…still have the belief that this man is guilty. they have come up with all kinds of stories and excuses as to how he got off.
they are still not convinced that he is innocent. even though there is not one screed of evidence that he did anything to the girls.
it turns out that the cops have more than enough evidence to prove this man innocent, and are using it to prosecute the girls in question.we will not be able to make this information public until the case involving the girls gets to court.
and when it does all come out.. these people will eat there words.20 June, 2006 at 9:28 pm #226314@forumhostpb wrote:

And the longer a serious crime goes unsolved, there’s no pressure on the police to ‘wrap it up?

..the police could frame an innocent person just to keep the public happy
Oh yes of course. Do you suppose they just pop down to Asda or Tesco and select somebody at random from the nearest queue? Maybe somebody buying rolling tobacco as they are bound to be a criminal.
Don’t worry about evidence – we’ll just nick some from the evidence room and say that it belongs to this case. Oh and we’d better sort out thge CPS as well. Don’t want all those dozens of case officers and lawyers looking too hard at this stuff.
Actually Tommy you’ve given me an idea to save loads of money. All the Police have to do is to arrest any old person and simply tell them ”it’s your turn mate” and fit them up for the next crime to be reported. No need to investigate any more crimes – just fit up someone.
