Freedom has many “facets”
I don’t believe there is any such thing as true freedom for any race of people because we are all “slaves” to some form of economic, social or political system whether it be tribal, capitalist, communist or barter, Islamic, Jewish, Christian, matriarch, patriarch or the nuclear family. or whatever.
Freedom to me means living in this country as opposed to a country which wants to stone someone to death for allegedly committing adultery, or a country that wants to commit genocide against another race or who forces its children to become soldiers or forces them to work for a pitiful wage.
Freedom is also about being human as opposed to being a wild animal, forced to dance or perform tricks whilst being beaten to entertain the public or hunted to the brink of extinction just to placate human egos and vanity.

I totally agree
As for my personal look at it, i’ll get back to you on that, i really cant define it just now because of the above. In what you say Jen Jen is that freedom or is it happiness? and is that what personal freedom indeed is, happiness ? i really dont know. But despite with agreeing with some of what all of you say including Gazlan, i can’t see how any of it is true freedom, even Gazlan is enslaved in his own definitions despite the free sounding spirit i think he is trying to portray, i may rethink this whole thing but the way i sit atm, the only person likely to be free is a man or woman who lives away from all society and it’s ties. But hey even Gizzly Adams had a bear to answer too lol … as i said .. i’m going to read replies and think on this some more.

Having spent years with people around me who tried to change me and make me someone I wasn’t, and of trying to fit into a world and path that wasn’t right for me because of other peoples’ expectations, I’d say it’s freedom to be who I truly am and to follow the path that is right for me, that to me is personal freedom, and a by-product of that freedom is happiness :D
And quite frankly I’m getting tired of being told I’m deluded, that I’m trapped, that I’m sickeningly content and should open my eyes, etc. etc. ad finitum just because I don’t fit into their personal view of the world or see the world like them.

I wasnt saying you were deluded or trapped or you should open your eyes, i dont know what my personal view of what defines “personal freedom” is, i just thought maybe hapiness is freedom or freedom is happiness i’m not sure how else to define it right now.
10 August, 2010 at 10:10 pm #445590Sorry Poli, that last paragraph wasn’t aimed at you.
I don’t think happiness is freedom, but I think a sense of personal freedom gives rise to happiness.
10 August, 2010 at 10:33 pm #445591Freedom is not having to post my life history on the internet. We’re so not free in this land at this time.
Freedom is a word like many others. Like flotsam, or haberdashery. There is a relative degree of liberation that we can all aspire to.
