There’s often talk about what Celtic means to the fans, what it should mean to the players. As a Rangers fan, I’d like to share what Celtic means to me:

8 April, 2008 at 10:47 am #324291was listening to talk sport yesterday and they were discussing the fact that rangers and celtic should unite to make one super team to give them a better chance in europe and more spending power what on earth were they thinking
8 April, 2008 at 1:30 pm #324292An Old Firm team?! From a financial point of view, I can see the benefits but back on planet earth there’s no chance in hell  Some Old Firm fans get on well, I have a lot of mates who are Celtic fans and there’s a bit of banter but that’s about as extreme as it gets. Afraid it’s not the same for everyone. Also, why are folk always calling the SPL ‘easy’? Before the obvious, predictable responses from the obvious people, here’s my thinking:
The SPL has 12 teams, you know it’s a two horse race for the title, relegation’s pretty much decided before the season even starts which just leaves the UEFA Cup spots.
The premiership is a 20 team league, all the talk is of the ‘big four’ but realistically it’ll be between two or three teams for the title, you have a rough idea who’s going to be relegated which just leaves the UEFA Cup spots.
It’s a stronger league but is it really any more difficult for the big boys to win it than it is for Rangers or Celtic to win theirs?

You didnt mention the fact that English teams get 30 million a season from TV Money before a ball is kicked. Celtic and Rangers get 2 million.
England has a population of 50 million. Scotland has a population of 5 million. Comparing the two is a bit unfair. I dont think anyone could name a League in the World from a Country the same size as ours that’s as good as the SPL.
I also dont think we need to have a better chance in Europe. Celtic and Rangers have both had good runs in the UEFA Cup the past few years, and also cracked the last 16 of the Champions League.
Given the aforementioned TV Money I think that’s our level. Sure we can beat the big boys or run them close, but winning the Champions League is a bit unrealistic, although I believe the Celtic team which reached the UEFA Cup Final was a better team than the Liverpool one which won the Champions League, so you never know with a bit of luck, and the right draw.
8 April, 2008 at 4:27 pm #324296Exactly BM, there’s countless reasons why the premiership is a stronger league than the SPL but I think under the circumstances our teams do pretty well for themselves. What I do find strange is that now that the Old Firm aren’t spending on the same level they used to, they’re actually performing better in europe recently than they have done for a while.
Let’s not forget either that getting relegated from the premiership is far more financially lucrative than winning the SPL and getting a crack at the Champions League. Got to agree about that Celtic side who reached the UEFA Cup final, that was a helluva strong team who got there on merit. Whereas Rangers have really made a pig’s a**e out of just about every game they’ve played so it just further proves your point that all you need sometimes is for luck to be on your side.
