After i told Mooose that i was thinking of getting a pug.She gave me a warning, that they were over bred and had many health problems.I looked in to it and shes right.
such as pugs and French bulldogs, after many would-be owners were found to be unaware of the health problems such breeds often experience.
According to data from the Kennel Club, registrations of squashed-faced, or brachycephalic, breeds have shot up in recent years: while just 692 French bulldogs were registered in 2007, registrations reached 21,470 in 2016.
Certain DNA variations in dogs are linked to a short skull shape. The animal
baby-like faces with large, round, wide-set eyes and flat noses are known to be a key factor in why owners choose such breeds: over time those traits have been bred for, and in some cases have been taken to extremes.

This selective breeding and prioritising appearance over health has left the breeds prone to skin disorders, eye ulcers and breathing difficulties among other problems. Now the British Veterinary Association (BVA) has launched a campaign dubbed #breedtobreathe to draw attention to the issues, revealing that a new survey of 671 vets found 75% of owners were unaware of the health problems of brachycephalic breeds before they chose their squashed-faced dog. Moreover the vets said just 10% of owners could spot health problems related to such breeds, with many thinking that problems including snorting were “normal” for such dogs.
I was talking to a woman yesterday whos last Pug onley lived three years because of the breathing problems. After two oporations to help the problem on the third oporation the dog died.

But mom did not..glad we didn’t. Had 2 dogs myself at the time. Territorial, protective. Would not have worked out well..never knew about the brain bit..but the anal glands..big big issues for dad. Always had to take to vet to help. And bone/hip issue. Forgot what call that..most of our pugs lasted 12 years..

Linda… losing our pets is hard, really, really hard.
The sadness, embrace it, it means you cared… the depths of your grief match the heights of your love.
27 November, 2018 at 3:27 pm #1110027So well said. Thank you. See I need help too from time to time..xx my pets have truly been my best best friends when all alone, lonely at home. Lack of self esteem, confidence..my own anxiety may trigger.. if animals could speak..often wondered what would say..but they feel your sadness that I learned with my dogs. Always knew or know when I am down…

27 November, 2018 at 5:07 pm #1110042Hiya Jamie x… there are lots of these puppy farms where they breed these poor female dogs till they have no further use for them. There are many in North Wales they meet you on the motorway to hand over these poor puppies. I would go to a reputable dog breeder also i would do my research on the breed of dog i’m interested in also the breeders. I would ask to see both parents. I have known people to purchase a sick or dying puppy then go through the heartbreak of it dying also the huge vet fees to treat it . You need to ask questions , if the breeders are reputable ones they should expect you to ask..have they been wormed?, are they weaned?, how old is the mum? how many litters has she had? i’m sure you can download fact sheets on buying a puppy. Join a facebook group on the breed of dog ur interested in you can get loads of advice from there including reputable registered breeders. One thing i would say to anyone thinking about buying a puppy, please don’t buy one for christmas its unfair to bring a pup into the home this time of the year where everyone is busy etc they need calm surrounding to settle in.

Dysplasia. Lots of breeds suffer from it, but it’s mainly in larger dogs like German, Shepherds , Lab’s, Rottie’s, St Bernards etc etc. Terriers can be prone to skin issues, just do a bit of research first, most pedigree’s will be prone to something or other but that does’nt mean they will get it, diet can play a big part in preventing certain illness’ they may be prone to. Mongrel’s are less prone to illness and can be the best, most loyal dogs ever so a rescue centre may be worth a visit, whatever floats your boat really.
