Well, I signed my first born up for pre-school. I’m a complete and total wreck about it. Yes, yes, I know it’s good for him and me and it is only 3 days a week for 3 hours, but he’s never been watched by anybody other than family. He’s never been exposed to day care and his only friends are his cousins. I’m freaked out! What if he hates it? What if kids are mean to him? What if there’s a fire or a tornado at school? What if he cries and I’m not there? What if he develops an allergic reaction to something that I don’t know he’s allergic to? I’m making my husband take off work on my son’s first day of school not just because it’s big day for for him, but I think I’ll be so upset I won’t be able to drive my 1 year old properly. Am I nuts? Tell me veteran parents, does this get easier?
29 July, 2008 at 2:20 pm #357924Completely normal frantic mum, thats all you are.
Yes it gets easier, and soon enough you will wonder what all the fuss was about when he tells you how much he enjoys it, brings you home some wonderful works of art, and also comes home with more of the paint on himself than the paper lol.
You will wonder what you ever did beforehand, honestly. 8)
As for tornado’s Im not sure, we freak out at a bit of rain over here, gawd knows what we’d be like if we had regular wizard of oz happenins every week!
Id bet the pre school has a colourful storm shelter specifically built with children in mind.
29 July, 2008 at 2:27 pm #357925He will love it. Those places are highly trained in knowing childrens needs. yes he MAY cry first day, but before your out the building will stop. he will learn to integrate with others, develop his own personality away from the family.and have a great time .
The alternative being, dont bother and wait till primary school. but teachers usually find the kids that have been through pre school, are more ready to learn. As theur brains have became accustomed to being with others and had rudimentary play. Which to the Adult eye,may look like kids play, when they play with sand and water etc. but its all learning, and sets them up for the big day, they take off to school.
You will weep for his babyness,as you will see this as possibly “giving in” but your Not, your opening up a new world to him. And come first day of real school.he will thank you. Not in as many words, but he will have confidence.
as for the tornadoes/allergies. he would have had same problems at home.Let him find his little wings.
Good luck.
From a mum.
29 July, 2008 at 4:30 pm #357926I can’t speak as a parent but i agree with Ruby and Sharon totally. He’ll probably be terrified himself first day there and possibly sob his heart out but in the same vein he’ll also cry when you arrive to pick him up as he has had such a good time! I see it all the time…
He’ll be unsure of what to expect, just as you are, but if you sit down together with a good book about starting school/nursery it may possibly help. Some nurseries expect you to visit before the big day and if you are anxious i’m sure you could call the centre to see if they can answer any questions you may have – they will only be too willing to help. Most places are well trained in helping parents who are more nervous than their child!
I’m not a mum but have worked on the other side of the fence for a few years. I’ve had pushy/nervous/loud/quiet/relaxed parents and i can tell you i know for a fact that they will be able to help you as well as your child!
He will thank you in the long run for the social side of things.
I hope it goes well AW! 8)
29 July, 2008 at 6:07 pm #357927whe my kids started big school I thought, thank god
time to myself :?29 July, 2008 at 9:28 pm #357928I’m with you Bon
Anyways AW, the more tense you are the more tense your child will be, I have seen it time and time again, relaxing yourself will help your child to relax, some kids are just plain mardy arses, the more you show you give a donkey dick the more they’ll cry.
My youngest tried it on I just left him in the capable hands of the pre school teachers. They said to me we wish we had more parents like you as it would of made their job easier.
Take heed.
