Getting back to torture….
Torture is not something that should be used by a civilised society in an ideal world. But then what is torture? Clearly inflicting pain to extract information is torture but what about sleep deprivation, discomfort or hunger.
In the case of terrorists I think the rules can be bent if the stakes are high enough – if someone being questioned is known to have planted a nuclear device somewhere, then I’d guess it’s OK to torture them to find its whereabouts.
There is a danger too, with torture that the wrong information is extracted. Saddam’s regime used to torture people to get them to name opponents of his regime. Torture victims named innocent people to save themselves.
With the nuclear weapon scenario, the victim would, if they gave in to torture, name the correct place for the device because they would gain nothing by naming the wrong one.
