Why do they run holding a burning lamp ?????????? Iv always wonderd that to be honest
6 April, 2008 at 5:00 pm #324026All of those issues are now being openly discussed though, that isn’t a bad thing. The committee must have been aware of all of those issues when they agreed to the Games being held in China in the first place. They need to look more closely at the countries who want to host the games. Tell them to clean up their act before allowing them to put themselves forward perhaps.
It is either very complicated or very simple, depending on your perspective.
6 April, 2008 at 5:02 pm #324027Fire was sacred to the ancient Greeks, and I think it was to do with a messenger who ran a long way carrying a torch …. something like that Sunny. They used to have flame burning all the time when they held the Games in Ancient Greece.

6 April, 2008 at 5:04 pm #324029Perhaps they’ll give the next games to Israel, another notorious human rights abuser.
6 April, 2008 at 5:05 pm #324030No it wasn’t the messenger of the gods.. it was just a man carrying a message sunny, but he ran a feck of a long way, bless him.
6 April, 2008 at 5:06 pm #324031Trouble is the athletes who i’d imagine are mainly apolitical are the ones who suffer from any boycott I think it has to be done politically but then like Geoff said contracts and money will prevent that

6 April, 2008 at 5:10 pm #324033Oh, I’ve just found out that in fact, the Torch was introduced by Hitler at the 1936 Berlin games, and actually has nothing to do with the Ancient Greeks. Well, this is just one thought on its origins anyway…
The custom of lighting the flame at ancient Olympia and relaying the torch to the modern Olympic stadium is also a legacy of the Berlin games, although many wrongly think it derives from the ancient Olympics. Carl Diem, organizer of the 1936 Olympics, seeking to glamorize them with an ancient aura, staged the first lighting of the Olympic flame, now a hallowed ritual in which thousands delight. The first Olympic torches were made by the Krupp Company, better known for providing weapons for two world wars. The association of the Olympic torch with peace came later, as the flame arrived at more peaceful venues.
So it is a Nazi symbol…. how apt…..I should have put the rolling eye emoticon in there.
6 April, 2008 at 5:11 pm #324034Didn’t he run from Olympiakos to Athens (26 miles and whatever yards), that borne the marathon? Isn’t Marathon another city/town in Greece? It’s all tied up somewhere. And didn’t he die on completion of his messenger run?
