The BBC’s new diversity czar complained yesterday that she was sick and tired of seeing white journalists reporting from far-flung war zones.
Mary Fitzpatrick, who is mixed race, said the corporation should use correspondents from the same ethnic background as those in the country from which they are reporting.
Her comments angered journalists and politicians, who accused her of blocking a new generation of reporters keen to follow in the footsteps of correspondents such as Martin Bell and Kate Adie.
Miss Fitzpatrick, who is paid £90,000 a year, said: ‘I get tired of repeatedly seeing programmes where (the situation is) “Here we are in Africa and here’s a white person, saying well, look at these people.
‘I would prefer to see somebody who understands that culture, understands what’s going on and can say: “Look with me, because I am part of this.”‘
In her first interview in the newlycreated role of editorial executive of diversity, Miss Fitzpatrick, who is in her forties and was poached from Channel 4, said: ‘I think what’s really important is that BBC News reflects the audience that it’s serving. You need valid and culturally accurate voices speaking.’

Can you IMAGINE a white person saying only white people should report in areas where whites are prodomanent….AND getting paid £90,000 a year whilst doing so.
BBC = British Broadcasting Company. I’m so glad my Licence fee is being used to pay people like her to decide who is of the most qualified to do so – NOT! Perhaps she should go and earn her £90,000 by putting herself in the very same situations that the reporters sometimes find themselves in when they travel to other countries to report breaking news! :roll:
She’s clearly barking however what she “says” is NOT BBC policy but what she believes it should be
That is what happens with much of the media hype- this is not a story about something that WILL happen but what one person who works for the BBC WOULD like to happen

I watch quite a lot of TV news – News 24, Sky news etc. Although the majority of reporters are white, there have been, over the years, quite a number of non-white reporters and news readers. I don’t see any bias, hopefully whatever race a person is they will report what they see truthfully.
As for matching the ethnicity of the reporter to the people he/she is reporting on, that would be silly – a kind of apartheid, almost. However, for in-depth investigations, ethnic matching might be worthwhile, and is probably done already.
What a load of tosh, just because someone is black doesnt mean they’d have a clue about african culture, what if they were born in the uk and raised with uk culture? Same for anyone. That is judgemental and racist.

Interesting, someone (you) a normal member of the general public is saying Mary Fitzpatrick, who is mixed race, is racist, racist against white people.

Will Mary be sacked? Not in the slightest!!
Will Mary be encouraged in her thoughts? Quite probably.
What does this mean for the white majority who help pay hers, and those who encourage her, wages?
It means they will seek a voice to speak up for them? I see NO other organisation doing so.

Isn’t that what she’s saying? Isn’t she saying that she would like to see more people of the same ethnicity as the places they are reporting from? What she’s saying is not that controversial. Take a look at CNN International where you frequently see reporters of African origin reporting on African issues, reporters of Arab origin reporting on arab issues, reporters of latino origin reporting on South American issues, Italian reporters reporting on mediterranean and adriatic issues, etc. They’re not the only ones who report on those issues but I don’t think anyone is advocating that there should only be reporters whose ethnicity matches the story they are reporting on. I think what’s being suggested is more reporters with a cultural connection to the places they are reporting from.
