Several hundred families in sheffield are over the next couple of weeks, moving into a housing complex of caravans Most of these families are former council tennants many of who had no home contents insurance. they will be given any help needed to make their stay as comfortable as possible although its no docklands is it a new and better start for some ? or a trailer park ghetto in the making ???

We already have trailer parks, its just that people dont pay much attention to them because they are populated mostly by the elderly and are under the guise of ordinary caravan parks so its not really a big deal

But are you sure this isnt just a temporary thing until their actual homes are repaired? Because this idea has been put forward many times in the past as a low cost way of housing immigrant workers and asylum seekers but has been thrown out just as many times for being classed as “impoper housing below the standards these people should expect”

So it would be quite ironic if we think it IS a suitable standard for our own home grown folksies lol

As much as I feel sorry for the uninsured and hope they get sorted its their own faults for trying to save a few quid.

When I was with the council our housing insurance was like a quid a week or something rediculous like that.

It would not be fair to those who pay for insurance if everybody was helped on an equal footing.

    Thats why we have insurance.

a few years ago my mum in law was flooded in wales, it was an absolute nightmare for her. she spent the night it happened in a hotel in her wet clothes all night!!! she wasnt that mobile and had to wait for someone to ‘rescue’ her so was actually standing in water up to her waist by the time they got to her.

she spent the next 18 months being shoved around various bed and breakfast establishments, some with as many as 3 flights of stairs, and then when the council finally got there act together she had to live in a portokabin type dwelling.

My mum in law was insureed but recieved no other help, fortunately now she is settled again in her council maisonette.

As far as having no contents insurance is concerned, if you are out of work or on benefit thats the last thing people think about, there are usually other priorities to think about.

Our Council encourage you as soon as you are offered housing to have insurance. And with it costing so little I dont think even those on benefits could not afford to have it. Even more reason to I would have thought.

(hows your hols going Cath? 8) )

Thats actually a fair point goony, I’ve heard a few people say that council contents insurance is unbelievably cheap but I also know countless people who have always been council tenants who didnt even know they provided the facility too so I dont think its quite as transparent as you make it sound

And non council contents insurance is nowadays ridiculously priced and is well outside the income of not only people on benefits alone, but also those who are working single parents and couples with kids who are on or are near minimum wage as the premiums have skyrocketed far outside inflation from when I first started having it 20 ish years ago and £30,000 worth of cover for all risks with new for old replacement used to cost me £40 a year

But aside from that there seems to be a “tenants mentality”, I’ve been fitting burglar alarms for most of the last 25 years and frequently even now have people say “well we never had/wont have one because its not OUR house” lol, which considering an alarm is ONLY to protect the contents of the house along with the people living in it really amounts to a rather moronic standpoint on the issue which probably extends to the topic of contents insurance too I would expect

Yep agree. My brother in law (no children but married) lives in a one bed flat with no insurance. Got burgled last month. He has a full time wage (not much, but a wage) and so does his wife. There was no excuse for them not to have it.

Im with morethan and it costs about 17 quid (i think, guessing without clarifying here) a month. I claimed the same month my first direct debit went out for £300 worth of garden plants that got nicked and they paid out. I was gobsmacked, I expected them to give me the two fingers!

People from the local “trailer park” took them.

Anyway, I think as a nation we have a very real need for trailer parks to be honest as with the amount of single parents we have and the negative impact feminism has had on our society we have a rapidly dwindling amount of half decent boinkable sluts which seem to be a thing that are quite prevalent on trailer parks if television is to be believed (which of course NEVER lies to us lol)

So I’m all for them obviously

    Boinkable…. now there’s a word…. 8)

You dont wanna be living next to one (like I do).

On the upside though… every but of metallic rubbish I put out and book up the heavy squad to come and remove miraculously dissapears before they come.

Ive made friends with quite a lot of them and they have promised not to drive stolen cars down my street and park them outside my house and set fire to them any more.

Look, I’m probably not the first person to say this but,,,,,,

Having other trailers next to yours isnt exactly whats meant by “living next door to one”, thats what the people in the houses SURROUNDING the park are supposed to say haha
