Sing the title of this post to the tune of the Teddy Bear’s picnic. (Just a bit of fun eh?)
But seriously (‘cos this IS a political forum), I thought that as today (May 3rd) is the day when most of the country (excluding the Metropolitan Local Authorities etc) vote for the local Councillor of their choice
….. and …….
since ”you know who” has been posting loads of stuff from the BNP press office trying desperately to talk them up as a new force to be reckoned with in British politics, it might be useful to message board readers if things were put into some sort of perspective.
So:
At at 6.59am this morning….(the polls open at 7.00am)
The Conservative party is currently the biggest political party in local government with 8,297 councillors
The Labour party is the second largest with 5,175 councillors
The Liberal Democrats come third with 4,372 councillors
The BNP have as many as 47 councillors. Yes that wasn’t a typo …. it really is only 47.
The Conservatives control 166 councils …. plus they have 17 MSP’s in the Scottish Parliament and 11 seats in the Welsh Assembly..
The Labour party has control of 55 councils…. plus 50 seats in Edinburgh and 29 seats in Cardiff.
The Liberal Democrats control 34 councils ….. plus 17 seats in Edinburgh and 6 in Cardiff.
The BNP has control of …… er …… NO councils at all …. and nobody has ever even heard of them in Scotland and Wales.
Today there are a total of 10,455 seats being contested in 312 of England’s councils and the people in Scotland and Wales will be voting to elect a new Parliament in Edinburgh and a new Assembly in Cardiff.
So if the BNP hold a total of (currently) 0.26% of the council seats in England and nothing at all in Wales or Scotland ….. and they manage to make no impact whatsoever on ANY of the policies that affect YOU – what possible chance do they have of doing so after today’s elections???
Even if they improve their vote enormously – they will still end up having the significance of a pinprick on an elephant’s backside … an irritating little bug to be swatted when anybody can be bothered to do so.
So as the BNP spokesman keeps on telling us:
Remember – it’s YOUR vote … YOU decide YOUR future.
3 May, 2007 at 12:46 pm #268986Having read the BNP website, they are already preparing many of their candidates for defeat, blaming of course everything and everyone but themselves.
It would be interesting to see how many spoiled ballot papers there are (in line with the BNP campaign to spoil a ballot paper where the BNP is incapable of fielding a candidate, i.e. destroying democracy through their own incompetence and weakness) across the country.
I might even stay up to watch some of it tonight
3 May, 2007 at 11:17 pm #268987I see the BNP lost their seat in Broxbourne… I remember the controversy when they won that … didn’t last long, eh?!?

You beat me to it!!
Broxbourne 1 BNP 0
3 May, 2007 at 11:27 pm #268990west yorkshires vote wont be counted until tomorrow. but the postal vote was reduced by 20.000 when new rules were brought in to stop the block voting by certain communities by filling in their slaves [sorry wives] forms for them. last year elections were shown to be a sham in birmingham when people were caught red handed cheating by filling in forms without the rightful voters ever seeing them.. nuff said..i also note the bnp have lost at least one seat already.. they can hardly afford it can they. doncha just love a democracy.
3 May, 2007 at 11:33 pm #268991The fascism AGAINST the BNP…
3 May, 2007 at 11:34 pm #268992wasp
The south will reject the BNP. the North (except Lincoln where not one BNP candidate has been elected!) will see a BNP rise
My prediction anyway
3 May, 2007 at 11:41 pm #268993Slayer is partially right, but the BNP won 11 councillors in east London last year.
750 candidates, alot of brand new people standing for the very first time in their lives, with families and full time jobs, with most of the political world against them, whatever they do, will be a success.
4 May, 2007 at 8:57 am #268994Ah ha!!! so you are already crafting a statement so that when the BNP get a thrashing by the voters …. you can claim a victory for the underdog???
