Before you run screaming.. No, this is not a thread for discussing the noxious whinge that Cyndi Lauper so criminally forced upon us in the 1980s. :?
Pity, I love Cyndi Lauper. Time after time was ace, as was true colours
30 March, 2008 at 3:15 pm #321420Id love to go back to dickensian times, but to witness both sides, the rich and the poor. The squaler of the plague, and the great fire of london, see the rich lavishing in magnificent clothes and the poor with their huckleberry fin trousers.
Dave likes the 1940’s, goodnight sweetheart days. Id also love to go back there, to France and infiltrate the nazi’s and help the resistance.
I love this thread!
30 March, 2008 at 3:16 pm #321421Ok i may change my mind but …
i think Victorian times would have been a good time period to live in, i think the massive changes during the reign of Queen Victoria both cultural and economically would have been interesting.
Also the majority of men were still gentleman and acted accordingly, well, on the outside anyway, and the majority of women were ladies and again acted accordingly on the face of things.Though that said i believe prostitution was also most rife then so maybe there is an argument to that.
Children were raised in a disciplined manner overall, and we can all see whats happened since thats changed.
By the end of the Victorian Era all children were or should by law have attended school, i think up to the age of 12 or 13 at least (not sure on exact age) but at least children were getting an education of sorts, and it was disciplined and teachers could be teachers and were not afraid to tell the kids off then.(Bring back the cane and dunce corner i say lol )
But also womens right began to change, rights to divorce and custody of children, that 20 years previous wouldn’t have been there, but it wasn’t as easy to just ignore the vows u made before god it was a more serious matter than what divorce is nowadays.
Also the more charitable missions began to change a womens role of service from a housekeeper, mother to a working women.
I know there were downsides to that period and probably the poor were poorer and the class issue was greater, so maybe thats an argument against it also. But for now I’ll shake my bustle and wrench in my corset and go for Victorian times :D
