We’ve got time wrong. We like to think of it as a continuum, a march of progress, an arrow striking the future. We believe that history is cumulative: a slow pile of lessons learned that will one day reach critical mass and reveal, grandly, The Way.
But it’s not like that at all. It’s trial and error. We don’t learn a thing. The needle hits the centre of the record and we lift the arm and play it again.
