Apparently if you are good at something it takes more effort to then do it badly than it does to do it well. Les Dawson is an good example, he was an excellent pianist but deliberately played badly for laughs; other (professional) pianists commented that the fact that he could, as an accomplished pianist, play so badly so well demonstrated how good a pianist he really was.
I suspect the same can be said of people who deliberately portray themselves to be stupid or inarticulate.
