I cant eat prawns?? i have a cholesterol prob too and am on slimvastin? I love prawns!!!
lol @ SLIMvastin!
anyay, I can eat anything I want to, so I don’t understand – I think it because mine is heredatory and yours must be more diet related?!
My cholesterol is 5.8 I read that anything over 5 is not good so I went to the docs… anyway he said in my case 5.8 is ok… because Im healthy, I sort of accepted that but it worries me all the advice is over 5 is not good. Very confusing… does anyone else know their cholesterol count and if they were given medication why? and at what level is it dangerous?
5 August, 2011 at 1:05 pm #469045Mrs T – as far as I am aware it should be around or about 5, so I wouldn’t worry too much. Ask if it is heredatory or not ie is it the LDL’s or the HDL’s that are high – it makes a difference. I suspect by what you have written that your doc said that it is your HDL’s. x

There ye go Eve.
http://www.simvastatin.co.uk/cholesterol.html
mentions prawns almost right away !
” One of the causes of high blood cholesterol levels amount people in the UK is eating too much saturated fat. The cholesterol which is found in some foods such as eggs, liver, kidneys and some types of seafood eg. prawns, does not usually make a great contribution to the level of cholesterol in your blood. It is much more important that you eat foods that are low in saturated fat. “
Hi rubes , is this where you got your advice not to eat prawns from ? I read the above as saying that the cholesterol contained in foods like prawns does not make a big difference to the amount of cholesterol in your blood. I dont think its very clearly written.
A friend who is a dietitian was talking about prawns and seafood the other day and said that they can be eaten even when trying to lower your cholesterol. She said that the current advice for people trying to lower their cholesterol levels was to adopt a low fat diet rather than identify specific cholesterol rich foods.
We were also talking about the contraindications between foods and medicines and grapefruit and simvastatin was mentioned. Apparently its the bergamottin in grapefruit which can result in the simvastatin not being absorbed properly and becoming over concentrated in the blood. Bergamottin made me think of earl grey tea which is supposed to be better for you because it is lower in caffeine but it contains bergamot which i assume contains bergamottin. Should it therefore not be be drunk by people trying to lower their cholesterol with simvastatin. I googled and found lots of people asking the same question but no real answers.
Sometimes when you look into things ( especially with the internet ) it just becomes a minefield of conflicting advice :?You seem to be doing really well on the healthy eating ! Well done xx
5 August, 2011 at 8:02 pm #469052oh thanks for rectifying this sugar x and heres is me 80 quid lighter and not a prawn in sight :)
thanks for taking the time x
5 August, 2011 at 10:12 pm #469053I understand what sugar is saying (good pun innit!) but, it does depend on what type of high cholesterol you have – I am starting to get fed up of telling you all this – ask your doc whether it is LDL or HDL – it makes a hell of a lot of a difference to what treatment you have!
