22 February, 2011 at 4:35 pm #458775I have a lovely customer who is severely physically disabled, yet within her twisted body is a sharp mind. She sometimes comes shopping alone and I often have trouble understanding her, but by trial and error we get there in the end, and the sense of triumph for both of us is a delight.
Two things make me grrrrrr though:1) The other shopkeepers who won’t deal with her when she’s alone because “it’s too much trouble, I can serve 10 other customers by the time I’ve served her. Besides, I don’t want to go into her bag for her purse and sort it all out for her, I’m not her carer”
2) when she is assigned a new carer who comes shopping with her and treats her like a child, questioning everything she wants to purchase, sometimes refusing to help her with her money because they don’t think she should be buying something. She is an adult with a sharp mind who knows exactly how much money she’s got and knows eactly what she’s doing, she just needs someone to help her do it!
Although I do love watching these carers’ faces when they realise that I know her and chat away to her the same way that I would to anyone else and they watch her face light up :D
