try to find one via some one you know
ie a friend who has had some work done
and can recommend them
go look at his work
talk to him
ask to see a few of his jobs
and talk to his customers
see what they have to sayalso get a few quotes
see how they all compare
before you ask for quotes try to get a clear idea of what you want
you might say get 3 quotes but they all have diff ideas of what you want
make it clear to them
also read the quotes carefully
make sure it gives a full description of the work so there are no grey areas of what is or isnt included
and where ever possible get a quote not an estimateand if you award the job to some one dont be afraid to ask for proof that they are insured
11 December, 2010 at 1:46 pm #456263OK its no secret my husband is a property developer and I just moved into a farmhouse recently developed…. thing is its in the middle of farm buildings, barns piggeries etc which are also being developed.
My question is how do I keep mud out of the farmhouse without annoying the builders developing other parts of the site? Incidentally its a 1.5 mile walk to the nearest main road so please don’t suggest walking from there. Its a puzzlement and very frustrating.
Teapot :x

11 December, 2010 at 6:23 pm #456265Before he died and in his wisdom (bless him) my dad decided to replace the garage window on my mums garage himself.
He did a lovely job making the frame himself and resited the window more internally so it left an external cill.
Ok so all was well until recently I noticed the huge cracks in the garage wall… The original window was acting as a lintle holding the brickwork up!!
So needles to say the wall is sagging and cracked… Will a new window in the right place sort it out or will she need the wall rebuilt?
God bless my Non DIY Dad’s soul (I hope he couldn’t hear what she called him up in heaven lol)

sounds like you need a lintel at least
and most likely some rebuilding or replacing of the cracked bricks difficult to say exactly with out seeing it
you could send me a picture to give me a better idea11 December, 2010 at 7:20 pm #456267I cant get rawl plugs to stay in the walls? plugs come in various sizes and are colour coded
cant list them all
but mainly we use red or brown plugs
red plugs are 6mm
brown are 7mm
for example if you got a 7mm hole and a red plug its not going to stay in
also holes get worn some times especially if they arnt drilled deep enough in to the brick work and are mainley only in the plaster work in which case the soft plaster will often wear and get bigger
a lil trick we use some times is to glue the plug in to the hole
a good glue for this is Gorilla Glue push some in to the hole ,put some on the plug then push the plug in to the holeGorrilla Glue foams and expands
leave over night trim off the excess then screw in to it you could even use some glue on the screw11 December, 2010 at 8:37 pm #456269@thin ice wrote:
